Its slow in here again, so I just thought I'd start a thread for all of us to vent our frustrations about roadwork and conditioning.
I hate it. Yes I do it...a lot, but God knows I can't stand it. I've tried everything, none of it appeals to me. I've even put my treadmill in front of my TV to try to help the time go by faster, but as tired as I get the TV becomes annoying noise in no time.
The one thing I find that helps is music. Good kickass angry music. Something I would want to walk into the cage to. It helps me stay motivated when every part of you wants to be a huge p*ssy and just stop. While doing road work I also like to think about actually being in a fight. Sometimes this helps me forget about what I'm doing. Roadwork sucks not only because how tired you get, but also how damn boring it is too! But you know what, I find that the guilt and humiliation I feel after I b*tch out and don't go, feels a hell of a lot worse then the dog-ass tired feeling that I experience while running/conditioning. Not to mention I always feel really good about myself after running/conditioning. Plus (although I haven't experienced this yet) I would think if you lose a fight soley because you gassed out you would hate yourself for it.
As far as conditioning drills, they all pretty much suck. I'm not talking about long sessions on the pads or the bag, those are tolerable, but I'm talking about straight up conditioning drills. Like one of my trainers has me to "jingle jangles" (anyone who played basketball/football in HS knows what that is), but I sprawl at every turn and we do 2 jingle jangles, followed by 15 seconds of situps, then do the jingle jangles again for 6 mins straight. I've made deals with Satan in my head to shorten the time before. We do this other one where we hold a heavy bag above our heads and run back and forth for a minute, stop and do pushups for 15 seconds and start again and so on for 6 minutes. But the worst of all is the bear crawl. I hate that sh*t. I'm 6'8", I'm not meant to do that sh*t. By the end of the 6 minutes I looks like a wounded snail, not a bear.
Sparring sessions are the only fun way I know of to get in shape. Especially when you get "smoked" (when guys get replaced with fresh guys every minute, but you stay the entire time). Whew, that is hard, but fun as hell. Problem is you can't do too much hard sparring or you'll be a big walking injury.
Finally, diet sucks. I'm not a sweats guy, but I love fried chicken and steak and burgers and pizza and so on. Its so damn hard to eat broiled boneless skinless chicken breast, steamed rice and veggies for every meal. And drying out to make weight sucks ass too. When its close to the weigh in day and you're starving I swear you can smell good food from a mile away. It gets to the point that driving by Popeye's chicken makes me drool on myself. But the night after the fight is always fun! After the fight before last I was in the drive through line for mexican food and I was on my cell phone ordering pizza to my hotel room at the same time! True story!
I love fighting, but running, cardio and dieting sucks hard!!! I'm not trying to whine and complain, I just think its good to vent if you disslike something from time to time. So feel free to vent or rant in my thread if you like.
My no upcomming fight training:
Wake-up 4:30am for 30 min run followed by 100 hard kicks to the heavy bag with each leg.
Work
Heavy & Hard Lift (Not everyday)
Hang out for a short while at home
MMA Training
Followed by two 3-minute rounds on the rope
Pass out in bed
My getting ready for a fight training:
Wake-up 4:30am for hard 30min run followed by 100 hard kicks to the heavy bag with each leg.
Work
Short lift with light weights followed by 3 to 5 mile hard run (depending on how close I am to fight night)
Hang out at home for a short while
MMA Training with conditioning drills at the end
Two 5-minute rounds on the rope
Die in my bed
But I do take days off, I might be dedicated, but I'm not crazy!
What do you guys do?
