Last night I was looking up some stuff on bending, but I couldn't get registered for gripboard.com. Today I went to Lowe's and looked around at their stuff and picked up some leather gloves, 10 7x5/16" aluminum nails, and 2 6x1/4" bolts, one fully threaded and one partially threaded. Got back home today and I found out quickly that I was underestimating my strength with the aluminum nails. Seconds ago I just bent the fully threaded 6x1/4" steel bolt, now to try the partially threaded one....ugh, seems I met my match. Well now that I can go to gripboard, I found out that I should have bought leather strips instead of gloves, and that I should have bought bolt cutters and some long lengths of steel bar. Now I know that I will need some bar about 3/16" or 1/4" thick. Anyway, to the point...

Who here bends and what do you use? What are some of the most impressive bends you have done?

Yup, should've gotten strips. I don't know much about bending but I want to start it as another "grip hobby" along with tearing. Hopefully this thread gets some more hits and some more experienced benders will provide some good tips and what not to the bending newbies like myself.

I bought IM Bag O Nails. so far I can only bend the green. Cant even kink the yellow. The technique that required to do big bends under the chin is a no go for me. I cant even bend a white like that...

www.gripboard.com has tons of info....as does www.grippermania.com....some individual benders there also have some other sites that go in full detail...good luck

So far I am having easier time with tearing. I was focusing on tearing cards for a while.

I havent bent anything significant,

I have managed to lever my 10lb hammer over my nose recently, thats in the same category,

I need to go to ho depot and get some shit to bend.

Go to the gripboard and check out the bending sticky by Greg Amidon.

Yup, that is the sticky that made me realize I had mostly wasted my money at Lowe's, but I guess I got to do a little bending for fun and know for certain that I need 3/16" either round or square steel. For those of you that have a gripboard.com login (if you don't get one and it should let you in 24 hours or so..) the post is here... http://www.gripboard.com/index.php?showtopic=11889

I bend a fair bit, I've managed 60 penny nails both double underhand and overhand. I've also bent a 60 penny nail behind my back and bent two 5" nails at once. I'd reccomend getting a sledgehammer and training on it a lot, buying plenty of 3/16 steel and bending that (get form down and get a feel for the rhythm of bending before going too hard). I'd also look into trying tearing as well, the two complement each other nicely.

Yeah, the general consensus amongst experienced benders is that a beginner should build up the volume using easier nails for a while.

I made the mistake of starting with 60d nails...

I failed on a bunch of attempts and then managed to just to barelyt kink one the first week I started bending.

I then switched the next week to bending a bunch of smaller nails to try and get my technique down.

Then the week after that I went back and tried a 60d nail again, and bent it all the way. I can melt 60d nails pretty fast now.

Let your hands REST though. REST THEM AND TAKE CARE OF THEM... Or you'll be sorry.. very sorry...

I've taken some time away from it recently because my hands were bothering me when I was trying to sleep. Everytime I'd lay down to go to bed they'd start just aching like hell...

However, before that I was bending maybe 1-2 60d's twice a week or so, and would just bend randomly when someone would mention "Hey i heard you could bend big nails, whats the trick?", and then proceed to let them touch a nail, feel how sturdy it really is, then crush it in front of their face and watch their jaws drop.

Yeah, I think Urban likes to bend at parties.

So...many...jokes...can't cope with pressure...

I've heard that a guy who I vaguely know was running his mouth about how he thinks he's got a really strong grip and then did'nt believe I could bend nails/rip phonebooks, think I may have to go see him and take one of my CoCs and a few nails.

I bend probably once a week, occasionally more frequently but I prefer to work more on the sledgehammer as it's easier to vary the difficulty whereas different nails tend to be quite a big jump.

I meant he likes to bend nails at parties. Sorry Urb, honest.

This is going to sound like I want to increase my bench, but I'd really like to fold bottle caps in half then quarter. Urban said he does this.

Any suggestions in grip exercises?

I figured I' start at levering, wrist roller, pinch plates.

I've never tried quartering bottle caps but the initial bend in half is just pinch strength, work your thumbs. Anyone got a vid of quartering bottle caps, would love to giv it a go.

Quartering bottle caps is more of a pain tolerance thing than grip strength.

If you have any type of reasonable pinch strength at all, you can quarter a bottle cap no problem if you have the pain tolerance to be able to do it in your fingers.

Today I went back to Lowe's and got what I needed. 2 six foot lengths of 3/16" hot rolled steel and one six foot length of 1/4" hot rolled steel. Also picked up some bolt cutters and two strips of leather. Today I bent with double overhand under the chin and got 7", 6 1/2", 5 7/8", and 5 1/2" lengths of the 3/16" steel. I'm going to stick to 5 1/2 " lengths for now to get as many pieces as possible.

I was confused at Lowe's a little bit. What length of nails are you guys bending? 60d (I'm guessing that is a nail diameter rating) but what length? Everything I saw was around 4 inches, which seemed like it would be too short (for me anyway).
