I need to buy either an unlocked phone, or an ATT smartphone.

Wife's phone broke, no insurance :(

Anyway here are some of my options. Need to stay <200$

Looks like the Windows phones may be a better value. I'm ok with that because her friend has one and she said she likes it.

    Nokia Lumia 900

Those Windows phones run at best 7.8. I have a Lumia 520 (AT&T Go Phone, which works with post paid contracts, too), and I think it's phenomenal for the price. I would recommend it over the phones listed. It's $99 + tax at AT&T, but you can catch it cheaper online on other websites. The hardware is not as nice as the Lumia 900, but the 520 has the latest Windows Phone 8 and will be supported for the next upgrade to 8.1. I'm an Android person, and bought this phone as a temporary gap filler before deciding on which of the latest Androids that I'd like to buy.

I'm on my second Windows Phone and it's great. Samsung Ativ S WP8.

My last phone was the HTC HD7 with WP7 and it was also a great phone.

I'd find out how much more you're paying for an unlocked phone, compared to it normally

If it's a decent amount, look up how hard it will be to unlock it yourself

Yeah, I'd recommend looking into unlocking it yourself, too. You're paying a $110 premium on that Nexus 4 ([email protected] Play Store). That's easily the best bang for your buck if you don't mind the storage limitation.

That was my first choice but they are all gone.

I could unlock it myself but when I've looked at all the usual places, the price seems to be about the same.

The 99$ windows phone may be a good option. We could always upgrade later. Just need a stop gap.

I actually read several reviews for the the Lumia 520 and it seems to be a fantastic phone for a c note.

My wife is far from a power user. As long as she has Facebook and texting she's pretty happy.

Yeah, frankly I think the cutoff is between single core and dual core phones with 1GB+ of RAM. Personally that's where I feel these devices get really good. The phones before that perform mostly similarly, so spend wisely.

I did notice tho that between researching the Lumia which apparently is selling very well and seeing how fast the Nexus got gone, interesting to see the future of no contract phones is.

May be a good strategy to get Windows phones rolling a little more. Or if the Linux phones ever get rolling. We may see some real quality devices for sub 300

Even as a media player and GPS, this phone is great. At most you're going to lose $100, but likely, you can sell it and recover at least $50.

I don't do Facebook, and can't comment on that. Supposedly, WP8 integrates Facebook and Twitter on the People Hub feature. The speech to text feature works pretty well for texting. On the down side of the phone is no front facing camera or camera flash. It doesn't really bother me, though. Although as Madmick mentioned about have 1 GB RAM, I agree that for Android, you'd need at least that much. As far as Windows, 512 MB does well and 1 GB would've been nice. However, I'm sure that in order to keep the phone at a certain price point, sacrifices have to be made.

I don't see anything that beats that Lumia [email protected]$99. That's a remarkable value.
