underrated P4P guys throughout history

Matt Hughes and MM. Hell, Mouse was the baddest little fucker on the planet for a while and most people don't even remember him. Hughes was a prick but he was a damned wrecking ball inside the cage.

Dude was insane back in his prime and it's kind of shame that the UFC took over the division after his reign. Torres was a beast up until he ran into Brian Bowles
I was so sold on Brian Bowles becoming huge after that. If only he didn't have constant issues with his hand.

and the elevated testosterone thing.

..and getting arrested for possession of methamphetamine

Early 90s - Noboru Asahi & Marco Ruas

Turn of the century - Sakuraba & Bustamante

00s - Kid Yamamoto & Dan Henderson

2010s - Johnson & Edgar

Frankie could use some more P4P love, considering he was a defending LW champ at the weight/size of most BW fighters.

Conor again? That mf was hyped like no man's business.

Aren't you the guy I discussed with yesterday, who said Conor was an easy guy to held down because Khabib and only Khabib did in what is still Khabib's toughest tittle defense?

You also were around calling people fanbois :eek:

You are miserable hater, dude. And you don't have a clue in top of that

I'd say the P4P timeline was Royce, Frank, BJ, GSP, Fedor, Anderson, Aldo, Jones, henry, Khabib.
But there's been other really good P4P guys throughout history who don't get enough respect.

Big Nog was actually considered #1 p4p for abt 4 years until Fedor beat him! Very underrated imo ppl just didn't watch then.

Bas Rutten-- probably one of the most underrated fighters of all time

Might Mouse---Henry always struggled to make 125...DJ made is easy and tho he did lose, it was a split decision very close fight.

any other guys?
Did someone say Anderson Aldo?

The guys going back and forth between MW and LHW like Franklin, wanderlei, Hendo, Belfort

Prime johny hendricks and imo he beat lawler both times

Murilo Bustamante came up a lot in the early 00’s as a p4p great but I always thought that was vastly overblown.

werdum
hendo
bisping
rampage

for instance I would rank these guys above rich Franklin

all 4 fought in the 2 eras of mma and Franklin had no success in the modern era when all the just-bleed fighters began losing to better athletes.

Personally I blame the meth lol. Plus I remember Cruz winning the 2 rounds handily before Bowles broke his hand and had to bow out. Man if Torres hadn't made that stupid rape joke who knows where he'd be right now

Back when the UFC pretended to care about their "Code of Conduct"

Sherk, Hughes, Shields, Roid Hendricks. Hughes and Shields are in the shadow of GSP, but they are living legends.

If we discount steroids, Brock Lesnar. His career was short, but he was thrown to the wolves right away. He also survived fucking Shane Carwin, the Ngannou of his generation.

Just imagine Khabib beating Adesanya to become the champ, because that is pretty much what edgar did against. He should have been p4p at that time now that we know he makes 135 no problem.

Shooto legend Hayato Sakurai...one of the top P4P fighters in 2000 and 2001...
This guy was fucking skilled...

Had a huge comeback over in Pride Bushido

Went 18-0-2 until he met Anderson Silva...

Here is his Sherdog hl from very back in the day:

...and he also has a Sextape out there...for all ya freaks

Murilo Bustamante came up a lot in the early 00’s as a p4p great but I always thought that was vastly overblown.

First of all, such recognition came from being the best student of the widely regarded as best coach in Brazil back in the day, Carlson Gracie.

Regarding his performances in competition

>Bustamante was a 200lber who went to a draw with one of the most avoided HWs from the '90s, the 300lbs standout wrestler Tom Eriksson. Bustamante had also dispatched two men that same night in one round, including the underrated legit LHW Chris Haseman.

> KOed Jerry Bohlander, one of the most respected 200lbers from the 90s, who actually came into the fight with Murilo as the UFC 12 LW tournament champion

> Outclassed his opponents in the two UFC MW tittle fights he took part, only to vacate the belt looking for better money

>Gave prime Chuck Liddel and Dan Henderson all they could handle. Arguably has a W over both, as well as Rampage Jackson despite Murilo took the fight in short notice.

Regardless of how impressive his record looks, many pundits and fellow fighters credited Bustamante as a legit #1 p4p contender because of the skills he displayed:

>One of the most advanced BJJ games in the world at the time
>Capable of outmaneuvering an Olimpic Greco-Roman wrestler in Matt Lindland from the clinch and take him down
>Capable of stand with one of the best strikers specialist in Chuck Liddeld, despite giving up in weight
>Tough, experienced, calm, composed and well-conditioned.

If you think it was "vastly overblown" considering Bustamante as a legit contender for #1 p4p. Who in you opinion had much better credentials around the turn of the century-early '00s?
