"A soap opera, soapie, or soap is a serial drama on television or radio which features related story lines about the lives of many characters. The stories usually focus on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama.[1] The term soap opera originated from such dramas being typically sponsored by soap manufacturers in the past.[2]"
Basically they're drama television that usually are on at Noon - those that your parents love to watch.

Many people ask, why the UFC does not pick up Ben Askren, or Cyborg, or certain other fighters.

They pick who they think will get them views, and try to build that character up, package it nicely and put him/her in a Soap Opera type show for a season, or until the show runs out of steam.

Example, Brock, Ronda, Conor......etc list goes on.

Look at how Cyborg is finally in the UFC now? why now? because at the time, they decided to go with Ronda, and at the time Ronda IS THE UFC, just like how Conor IS THE UFC now. Just like a start up company, they package it up nicely, get everyone interested, and take it as high as it can go like an IPO.

They didn't get cyborg at the time, because they were busy building Ronda, and having cyborg would simply ruin the story they're trying to create.. But now that they've milked enough out of Ronda and the public has lost interest and see ronda as yet another UFC hype job? Now, it's time to bring her in.

Now it's time for another show.

That's just the cruel reality of the show business, there can only be one lead role in a given story. And they build and hire/not hire according to that model.

UFC aint in no fight business, it's in show business and show business only. Now that we've seen 2-3 shows about beauty, perhaps it's finally time they put out a show about the beast.

I just want people to know that Brock Lesnar was originally cast as Conor McGregor. Only he didn't duck fighters and could take a beating. He gave Shane Carwin, Frank Mir, Randy Couture and Overeem Red Panty Night PPV Parties.

Brock bless.

I got a soapie in Thailand once, it was awesome.

You honestly have the fans to blame. They have shown they want the fighters to be loud, obnoxious, and disrespectful to each other for their enjoyment.

The UFC is in the entertainment business just like every fucking professional sport.

Get over it.

we all love a brawl in professional sports, whether it's baseball, basketball, football/soccer.
why do we not see it everyday in these major league sports? they're in the entertainment business like you said, yet why do we not see it everyday on ESPN? why only once every few months. don't they want better ratings?

you're dumb, get over it.

Its in the business of making money. If that effects you don't watch. watch the joke that is boxing

That's why Dana was so happy to create a women's division. When he started he was about the fights and knew wmma was shitty and non competitive. As he grew he learned how profitable it is to hype, even in the absence of skill, which is why he was going on and on about Ronda... He just knew she was good in a shallow division and could hype the crap out of it.

Those sports have rules against fighting you retard. They are still trying to promote the most entertaining teams and players, and they change rules to make sure the boring players don't dominate.

Nobody wants to watch boring Fitch lay on people.

Seriously though they obviously do work by building up fueds and characters over sport but I think with a lot of these big names the attraction is making them love/hate figures, teasing the potential for a loss but hoping it never actually comes or at least takes along time to come.

I'd disagree but Conor running the show lately makes it feel a lot more like a bad tv show.

sports have rules... so? companies are here to make money no?
you gonna sit there and lie that fans from hockey, football, basketball, soccer, etc etc dont get more excited when they see a fight break out? live or on tv?

dont lie to yourself.

it's all about the dollars like you said. those other sports could easily do many things to attract more dollars if they want... using strippers live as cheerleaders. they don't though, because they have an image to uphold, as a professional sports league where the actul sports is the #1 priority and selling point.

that's not the model here in the ufc. i dont see how you're arguing with me about this lol.

True about the drama, but don't forget Cyborg's team pulled the plug on the Ronda fight when they decided she couldn't make 135.

by your logic muhammed ali was a soap star.

Theres very few authentic mma fans relatively speaking but most people like themselves some drama. Cest la vie.
