Media UFC Free Fight: Kelvin Gastelum pulled off the greatest upset in TUF history beating Uriah Hall

If only we knew how average Gastelum and Hall turned out to be.

Was a SD because Uriah wasn't 90. Gastelum needs to get his weight in check and go back to 170, he's only good against old dudes at 185.

I wouldn't call her a real UFC champion. She won a TUF tournament to become a champion of a weight class that just started. She refused to fight Valentina and hasn't shown she's a top level UFC fighter. She had a nice run on the show though.
That's the joke.

Hall as a 16-9 record, the dude would lose outside the UFC to plenty of guys, even when "hes on his game" he isn't world class, talented sure but many are.

Plenty of guys?
Bellator's #1 MW contender is John Salter, who could give Hall problems but apart from him and of course Mousasi who else? Maybe Lima.
PFL doesnt even have MW division.
ACA is not that strong at 185. Let alone ONE.
M-1 champ Kopylov just lost in his UFC debut to an inferior opponent than Hall.
Khalidov is already 40 years old. Shlemenko and Branch are also washed up at this point....

So I wonder where are those "plenty of guys" who are top10 material in UFC, as Hall is.

Kendall Grove beating Ed Herman seemed like an upset at the time if I'm remembering correctly.

he wasn't "good" against izzy?
He got knocked down 4x and lost, he was good enough be competitive I guess. His only win at 185 that isn't over an old dude is Hall though. All his other wins were over old dudes coming off of 1 or more brutal finish losses (aside from the SD over Jacare who was old but on a 1 fight win streak). His record at 185 against dudes that are within 5 years of his age is 0-3.

LOL at anyone who looked at Kelvin as the underdog in that matchup.

A skilled wrestler and decent boxer who enployed very adept octagon pressure, versus a guy who finished some cans with spinning roundhouse kicks.

Easy to say that now. Before the fight Uriah was pretty heavily favoured

I didn't think Gas should have been such an underdog, but if we're looking at odds, US vs UK had both finales upset at around equal levels.
Wilks over Johnson and Pearson over Winner.

I feel like there was another underdog story in TUF that was pretty big. That guy who beat CB dolloway to win his season. I remember him being an underdog the whole time, but I might be remembering wrong

You’re right Amir had a professional record of 0-0 when he beat CB in the finals. He beat CB during the show but that too was considered a fluke.

I have friends who are casuals who were telling me Hall would KO Anderson if they ever fought. I laughed at the time, but lo & behold, Hall did it, just 7 yrs later haha. Seriously, casuals were so high up on Hall, I tried to explain he was doing those spectacular finishes off of guys who weren't very highly ranked but they didn't wanna listen. People love hype trains, even when they're unproven against ranked guys

The within 5 years of his age is pretty meaningless metric.

The reality is if you look at his performances in the cage, he certainly belongs with the top fighters in the division, and that’s not really debatable. His last fight was his one bad fight where he got caught by a specialist. It happens.

Ngl I had money on Hall, he has disappointed me ever since.

He's not horrendous but he's beaten a bunch of old dudes.

He's 5-4-1 at 185 with 2 of his 5 wins being split decisions. The other 3 wins were a finish over Marquardt who was 1-4 in his last 5 with 2 of those 4 being brutal ko losses, Tim Kennedy who was essentially retired and filming a tv show. He hadn't fought in well over 2 years since Romero tko'd him and just came back for a paycheck and then Bisping who got dropped and choked unconscious by GSP just 3 weeks prior. Then if we count the Belfort NC because it was just for weed, Belfort was coming off of 2 straight tko losses.

I remember, but I thought that was hilarious. Kelvin seemed clearly superior to me. Standout college wrestler with boxing that was evident throughout the season is far more impressive than a guy who needs a ton of open space to connect rangey wheelhouse strikes.

Uriah was robbed {<shrug}

Uriah wasn't robbed, but I have to say he deserved to win that fight. I hadn't seen this fight since it originally aired like a decade ago and I remember thinking at the time that Gastelum definitely won; unfortunately, I took 30 or so minutes out of my day yesterday and checked this one out again and this was a classic case of a heavy underdog doing way better than expected and getting too much credit based off of that. Hall reversed or stood up from all of Kelvin's take downs save the final one, landed two take downs and a monster belly to back suplex of his own, and landed more frequently and impactfully standing (although Kelvin did show glimpses of how good his hands would become).

Kelvin won the first round but Uriah took the last two in a very high-paced and entertaining fight. If Uriah had brought this level of cardio to the Costa fight, that woulda been something to see. Alas, Uriah's nothing if not inconsistent...

Did that last statement make sense?

He's just been such a hot and cold type of guy his whole career... it just seems like he should be better!
