Rumored UFC Considering Atomweight Division

When should the UFC introduce an Atomweight division?

I hope we get this weight class, Close bantam weight and FW just keep straw fly and AW

Aside from Hamderlei, Cummins, Frey, Zapitella, Mihnea Gruissander (the girl who fought Frey twice, probably not that exact name) ... who else is a decent UFC caliber name at atomweight out there? Assuming all of these women would sign with the UFC and all of the women I mentioned above are dropping to atomweight, it would still be an 8 fighter division.
better than the no fighter division that is FW. BW sucks too, and those other girls moved down because it gives them a chance to compete. the gap between 115 and 135 is too large

Interesting but I'm sceptical. Wouldn't riot if it happened, but am dubious the UFC would make the division a priority even if they did add it.

105 is a lot better than 145, but let's be real. WMMA is limited. The best weight class, 115, is 'deep' relative to the other the divisions, but outside the top four or five ladies, who are very good indeed, the technical level is pretty fucking abysmal. The fighters the UFC would like to get behind for optical reasons - Waterson, PVZ, Dern, etc - aren't good enough to be title contenders. Meanwhile 125, 135, and 145 are zombie divisions. They contain somewhere between 1 and 3 viable elite fighters, with a marked lack of contenders, a shortage of new talent, and rising prospects who lose to the mediocre gatekeepers. There are few people with genuine star potential, even fewer with elite skills to back it up. 145 is a joke and only has any status at all because of the Cyborg legacy (and Bellator possesses the little talent that is out there). 135 was the glamour division of WMMA thanks to Ronda and Miesha but, other than Nunes, it has sucked for 2-3 years and seems unlikely to recapture the glory days any time soon. 125 is just LOL, other than Valentina (and probably the second best fighter is with Bellator). 115 is the deepest but let's keep this in perspective. The 155/Kayla Harrison thing is great for Kayla and PFL, but has no sustainable components.

I would be surprised if the UFC added 105. Most of the talent is already under contract elsewhere, and Asian to boot. The UFC ain't outplaying Rizin or ONE for someone who doesn't sell tickets or draw eyeballs in the US. The depth of talent in WWMA increased significantly from circa 2012 onwards, but then plateaued around 2016 and hasn't really grown thereafter. I'm not sure that it will expand in the future, given females are not often drawn to combat sports.

There are a lot of undersized girls who would benefit from it but it would take time to build.

I hope they introduce it just to see the intense butthurt from all of the insecure donkeys.

The UFC has 1 functional women's division out of 3 (I don't recognize FW as a division).
Get 125 and 135 sorted out first, then they can think about 105 if there's enough fighters & demand around to make it a thing.
Well I guess we're all just living in ur world, huh?

Invicta FC atomweight champion Jinh Yu Frey and top contender Ashley Cummins hope the UFC introduces the women’s 105-lb division into the world’s top MMA promotion. Frey and Cummins meet this Friday night at Invicta FC 39 for the promotion’s atomweight belt. Speaking to MMAjunkie.com before the fight, the champion Frey said she has heard rumors the UFC is considering adding the women’s 105-lb division, and she would be in favor of that in fact happening.

“I’ve heard a lot of rumors that say maybe the UFC is starting to look into the atomweight division. I’m going to be 35 this year and I’m hanging in there as long as I can. We’ll see. I’m not basing my hopes at the start they’ll start a division. I’m just taking it one fight at a time,” Frey said.

Her opponent Cummins agrees with Frey that the UFC should bring in the women’s 105-lbs division.

“Every day I say a little prayer the UFC is finally going to start the atomweight division. That’s been the goal, to be a UFC fighter. I want to be a world champ and I want to be a UFC fighter. Hopefully, 2020 will be the year (the UFC) finally starts the atomweight division,” Cummins said, agreeing with Frey.

Could be cool. Women's featherweight is pointless so just trade one for the other.

@CPH hit it on the head.

I’ll take 105 over 145.

145 was created for cyborg.
Nunes is a professional so she can make 135.
Cyborg is a joke. “I’ll die if I make 135”
Hey man. Stop lifting weights all the time then.

105 >>> 145
I'm guessing lifting isn't the big reason fora her inability to make 135. I'm guessing it starts with 's' and ends with 'teroids'

Google images of her from her early fights. She looks nothing like the muscle bound monster she is now. No natty women can make that change just from lifting weights.
