BJJ UFC BJJ is a Reality Show to be on You Tube

they both did a great job of dragging the legs to outside ashi and building base well. It's very hard nogi to finish outside ashi straight ankle. I just hate how grabbing a straight ankle seems to score even if its not a legitimate threat and more just being used as a control.

How long have you been training?

About 8 years BJJ on top of about 8 years (a long time ago) competing in wrestling and Judo back in my teens and early 20's. But I'm worse than my training time would indicate and even though they gave me brown last year, I still have imposter syndrome and the thought of being promoted to black in the next few years is terrifying without me getting SIGNIFICANTLY better at playing DLR, RDLR, lasso, lapel guard, leglocks and spinning shit.

Our two main professors are retired MMA guys (one former UFC) and they both have old school "position before submission" BJJ games. And my game has always been wrestling/Judo guy who smash passes and opportunistically goes for subs from top control. So our gym didn't seriously train the leg game until a 10th planet brown came over about a year ago, got promoted to black at our gym and started teaching a class. That dude's game is the opposite of mine. He sucks at wrestling but is a wizard at hunting legs off his back.

Nice, sadly imposter syndrome never goes away. I had it all through brown and still now in my third year as a black belt.

I'm a light feather weight so my guard has always been my strong point. Just recently started to do a lot of stand up. I have a lot of white and blue belts under me that make great training dummies.

I've always been a jiu-jitsu hipster so what ever was the trendy thing is what I practiced.

One thing I will say is Lapel guard isn't a thing you need to know how to do well you just need to know how to defend it.

I'm ashamed to admit that due to my wrestling background and me being at the "get off my lawn" stage of life, by default I've been following the Brock Lesnar approach of not being interested in the intricacies of moves I've never even heard of lol.

But in general I think it's more important to know how to DEFEND every attack than how to attack with everything. I’ve had success shutting down spider, lasso, DLR, etc. with old school knee slice, stack pass and plain old crotch sniff wrestling. But at 170 lbs and being middle aged, it’s getting harder and harder to outwrestle the bigger guys.

And with legs in particular because it’s not organic to position before submission, it’s hard for me to avoid dueling legs where I end up in 50/50 and then if other guy is a leg lock wizard, turns into a death spiral for me. So it’s for sure a hole in my game I need to fix.

I don't know if a bunch of drunk nerds would be as entertaining as a bunch of drunk meat head fighters.

Did they shoot this in a legal weed state? Because an evening session with a bunch of stoned nerds out by the pool would be hilarious.

grippo only had to tap 20 times.

henrique is waiting for herzog to stop it, and then henrique just lets go, and then herzog stops it.

Well if you ever want to send me footage I would be happy to review and give you some tips.

But I get you it’s hard the sport keeps evolving so fast. Staying up to date is a challenge.

I don’t know Nevada laws. But that could be better. I just feel like drunk nerds would turn into a hug fest or a magic the gathering show down.

Ya I was noticing that. Kind of weird.

So far episodes are good. Hope grapplers are cool with each other and no trash talks like TUF

Thanks bro I'll keep that in mind and will send you some tape when I get to a sticking point. For now though, I think I just need more reps trying to play X guard and going for SLX and outside ashi to set up the leg game.

Just starting to watch this. I think I am gonna enjoy this just got done with team picks so I'm super late to the party. ha ha

Love the plan.

Kyvann got lucky Josh isn't a professional. Don't know why you would come into the show so off weight?

I'm assuming they are going to do two 4 man tournaments for the actual card?

Anyone know what the card will look like for the first event?

What did you think of Carlton? I thought he was about to get robbed with the judges taking into account those bullshit estima locks.
I like his game. That Choi bar attempt to open the fight and the back take was nice.

The decision was the right one.

That armbar at the end sinched it

Couldn't agree more. I think Nolf grappled a strategic match and if not for the armbar might have pulled it off. But to me he looked very green at straight jiu jitsu and unless he's been half-assing it for the past year training wise, I don't see him becoming the next Nicky Rod at 170. His wrestling athleticism allowed him to take risks and quickly disengage as needed but I feel like he was getting caught way too much without offering any real offense.

But the real loser of this episode was once again... Rerrison Gabriel. Even when he wins, Mikey is coaching circles around him and making him look like a schmuck. Not sure why you cast a head coach who can't speak English and has the charisma of a potato. It's like they're purposely trying to make him look bad. FFS have him cracking jokes in Portuguese or something.

Here's his main contribution to the Carlton match:

"You want water?"

"No? How about towel?"

Then when his fighter wins, he makes a resting bitch face and a half-assed golf clap. And he made the same resting bitch face when Cobey lost.

I think they really wanted to make Mikey look good. So they chose someone that poses no threat.

I have a feeling that for the first little bit UFC BJJ will have a lot of squash matches to make guys look good and build stars kind of like a lot of the WNO cards.

I don't even think Mikey needs a push lol. Dude has GSP level wholesomeness without a mean bone in his body. They should have gotten a more obvious heel like Team Koscheck vs. Team GSP on TUF. Gabriel is coming off like a random jobber.

I thought Mikey might pull off some coaching magic but Nolf looked disappointing. He looked the same as he did at CJI almost a year ago. If anything he looked worse because at CJI he had a badass dance partner in Tye Ruotolo who refused to pull guard - knowing that he held all the cards when Nolf forced the TDs.

I know it's frustrating and unfamiliar for a wrestler without years of jiu jitsu to attack seated guard, but to me Nolf didn't look like an elite athlete who's had over a year to train full time for that specific scenario with some of the best coaches in the world. He kept going for the bullshit estima lock that wasn't there and the butterfly leg smash that Mikey showed him 10 minutes earlier lol, while getting caught in sub attempts at every turn.

Good 6th episode. Andy Varela with the sick duck under backtake with a claw ride. LMAO at Mauricio's pre-fight trashtalk, "I know he's a blackbelt, I know he's tough, he has a good haircut but I'm just going to do my thing." It wasn't quite enough but I feel like his wrestling style knee cut pressure passing is the kind of game Nolf should be playing.

How is Rafael Lavato Jr top 10 P4P?

that doesn't make sense at all.

And you need to clarify that it's no gi P4P because gi is 1/2 the sport and most of the people on that list only compete in no gi (they just do 1/2 of jiu jitsu)
