Ufc 71 main event. Do you remeber where you were?

Can't say... I was born about 12 years later

ChumpyKiwi probably looks like

No a shame in being a semi newer fan. You get to watch a ton of fights for the first time, which is bad ass. Do you have Fight pass by any chance?
I used to have fight pass before I abandoned it for ESPN +. Luckily I watched a lot of great older fights

Awesome! Did you ever watch the fights from pride 33?

Hendo vs Wanderlei 2
Nick Diaz vs Gomi
Sokodjou vs Lil Nog
Shogun Vs Overeem

It was the first one I remeber ordering. Which kind of sucks because UFC 68 , 69, and 70 all had epic main events.

UFC 68- Couture vs Sylvia
UFC 69- GSP vs Serra
UFC 70- Cro Cop vs Gonzaga
UFC 71- Rampage vs Liddell
agreed! before that 66 was of course chuck vs tito....and i think 67 had to be anderson? idk off my head

I was 21. I didn't watch it live, so no idea what I was doing exactly on that day.

Though thinking about it, I was probably going out.

Pre sure I was drunk at the local pub as I knew the owners even though I was underage. All I remember was walking back to TAFE, buying cheezo' as a lunch snack on the way back and blacking out in the toilets vomiting up cheezos like a kid with whooping cough. Pretty sure I got escorted off campus and almost got hit by a car.

I don't think I truly understood Fedors greatness at the time yet. I had seen videos of him destroying Gary Goodridge and Zulu but didn't realize he was the greatest fighter who ever walked the earth. Big Nog was just a name to me then also. I went on a Big Nog marathon as well, like you did with Fedor.

When was the Barnett/Fedor buildup? Was it supposed to happen at an Affliction event?
I was very much a life long casual fan. My brothers would rent the early UFC events and I would watch them. So I was aware of the basic timeline. But it wasn't until watching a Pride DVD in 2006 or so and I saw Fedor and other legends (Wanderlei, Hendo, Sergei, Igor, etc.) that I really became interested on my own. Then Affliction 3 was supposed to be Fedor/Barnett. I was fuckin stoked. Then, Barnett pissed hot, and the organization folded. But yeah, that's what hooked me. And so many times since have I allowed myself that level of excitement only to be let down. I learned that lesson early, and no matter what, it still sucks.

Only an idiot would have thought Chuck could beat Rampage.

If i recall correctly. Chuck stayed at around a -200 favorite up until the day of the fight soooo...
Most people thought he would win

UFC 71.... I was 17 years old.... Watching Wanderlei clips on youtube in my free time... and Chuck was already the UFC GOAT at the time IMO......

I had all my buddies over. The parents were out of town. Ordered a couple Pizzas. Had a nice 30 pack of the best beer you can get. Busch Light. Ordered the PPV without permission from my parents. Like an absolute boss.

Houston Alexander had just sent Jardine into orbit. I'm not sure if he actually ever landed

We were pumped. Chuck Liddell was kind of invincible in most of our minds then. Though we all knew how good Rampage was and that he beat Chuck in Pride..... I am not sure his first fight in the UFC vs Marvin Eastman led any of us to believe he would beat Chuck. But Chuck floated that left hand. He left it hanging. And Rampage had an amazing shell defense. His boxing was the best it had ever been. He would have blocked that punch if it went to the head instead of the body. He rolled with it beautifully and countered with the cleanest right hook I have ever seen in my life. One of the first times I remembered being truly in awe from a fight outcome.

The Iceman wasn't invincible. Not even on the feet. And Rampage showed the giant hole in Chucks defense. He hung his hands. And that left hand didn't come up after he threw it.

I was at my friend's house. He was annoying when it came to Chuck. He may have been the reason I didn't like him, really.
I remember being worries for Rampage because of how nervous he looked... right up until the face-off.

Find Nick Diaz vs Takanori Gomi on google. It should be the first thing that pops up.
On Dailymotion. One of the best fights of all time. Especially because of how good Gomi was considered to be at the time. And a fight that was over turned because Diaz tested positive for marijuana.

Will do. Always happy to get recommended good fights to watch

Was he a chuck nuthugger or anti chuck?

I watched it at a bar called the Hardtimes cafe. Back then they were the only ones showing the UFC in my area. I remember being ecstatic because I was a Pride fanboy, and didn’t really like Chuck back then

"Mannn ain't nobody gonna beat Chuck..."
He used to obsess over him. Chuck was his intro to MMA.

Strangely enough, I do believe he later said he thought Rampage would beat Chuck, and that Chuck would beat Wanderlei (awhile after the above quote happened, he actually became pretty good at picking fights). Meanwhile, he lives in Vegas now, and randomly texts me pics of him with random UFC and Bellator fighters who I usually barely know much about.

I thought they rushed Rampage (and they probably did, realistically), so I thought he wasn't quite ready. Chuck hadn't been touched since probably the Vernon White fight at that point. Amlnd he had that granite chin. I was surprised to see him taken out so quickly.

But regarding my friend, we did argue over Chuck got his ass whooped (I guess because it was so fast, my friend thought it wasn't).

I think I picked Chuck in every fight he was ever in except the Shogun fight lol. I find myself annoying looking back at it.

Remeber Juanito? Rampages trainer? To this day I am confused on if he actually was a good trainer.. Even when it came to boxing. Was he an Edmond? Or an actual legit trainer?

Ironically, I respected Chuck's power, but rooted against him all the way up until Shogun. And I remember literally being reminded when he walked into the cage, thinking "that look in his eye looks a lot like Roy Jones Jr's" before he got disturbingly concussed by Glencoffe Johnson.

I think Juanito seemed to be a legit boxing coach. He was with Vitor before. And Rampage wasn't known for his boxing until Juanito.
But Rampage was known for his slams and savagery before Juanito.

I think he probably lacked the overall skills to put out well-rounded fighters. Rampage's boxing was legit, but he was nevee the same technically. I think with Juanito as his boxing coach, and someone else overseeing the rest, he could've been on top longer.

Also, Juanito said he'd retire if Forrest beat Rampage. Seemed like he was a father figure, for a time. On Beatdown, when they asked Rampage if he would also retire if he lost, he seemed a kinda put-off by that kind of talk.

I wasn't surprised to not see Juanito around anymore. But Rampage went to the wrong camp with Wolfslair, imo.
