He really isn't insanely popular, and loses contention fights...no leverage to negotiate a better contract.

Plus undisclosed locker room bonuses which most fighters praise the UFC for - pay days are increasing. Slowly, but they are increasing.
 
Lauzon is probably on a long contract, which when re-negotiated, will see him getting much more per fight.
