Scrolling through my timeline and saw this, Spong is one of my favourite fighters but I pre-cringed as soon as I saw him walking the weight out. Expected awful depth but was pleasantly surprised.

Anyone have a better idea of how much weight that is? If the plates are legit then it must be either 180kg or 405lbs. I know it's more than possible for a man of his size and I'd like to believe it, I'm just kind of shocked to see a fighter using that weight with respectable form.

The bar isn't even bending, those are spacer plates.

While I'm inclined to agree, I've seen stiffer bars that bend with no less than 200.

Dude filming is annoying as fuck.

And that depth is meh. High bar squats and he's not even hitting parallel.

That looks closer to 200lbs than 405.

The top down angle always makes squats look higher, I'd argue that if it isn't parallel it's not far off.

It's not impressive by S&C forum standards, no. But compared to other fighters he looks like an oly lifter.

    It's either 135lbs or 155lbs.
Can't tell what the one closest to the inside is.
Source; I coach teh crossfits and we all know the crossfits love their big plates.

The weight is not much. Form is terrible. Since form is so terrible, it leads me to believe he doesn't squat much weight. Plus, he walks it out like it's nothing.

Those are probably 10 kg plates, so more like 220 lbs.

Yup. Isn't it interesting though? Such a high level fighter/athlete like himself so weak in squats? He's only 29 too... he's not a big guy per se, but has a decent amount of power in hands and legs. I really wonder if he got his squat game up if it would help him.

He already kicks awfully hard. So if it improved...watch out. I have a hell of time making out the weight of those plates since I'm a cast iron guy.

First of all, you have no idea of how much he squats.

Second adding weight to his squat wouldn't suddenly make him a better fighter. He has plenty of strenght and power.

Who has the hardest kicks in the world? The Thais. How much do they barbell squat? No idea. I doubt very much. They definitely have strong legs and do a lot of air squats though.

I'm not saying squats/weighted squats are not good, because they are. But there is more at work here.

Yeah. Different example that I think is related - look at the average pro golfer. They can generate an amazing amount of power through their hips & legs, but put them in a gym and I bet they're really unimpressive. Maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges but I reckon conventional strength training helps a good kick about as much as it helps a good swing - not that much

    Terrible is a massive exaggeration.

I hate these damn 'crossfit' plates though.

His squat form isn't terrible. You see far worse shit at your local commercial gym.
Those are mickey mouse plates though.

Why is it hard to believe he can squat 405? I cannot see the video, so I can't really comment, but 405 seems like a pretty reasonable number a pro athlete to hit.
