Tyron Woodley by his own choice has been out of action for almost a year and half so my question is could he of used this time to improve? Such as training his cardio issue or issues when someone backs him up to the cage. Follow up question has there ever been a case of a fighter going on a long layoff and coming back better?

It's not gonna help him getting anotha one if he loses.

I don't believe it helps or hurts him, but I do feel it hurts Lawler. He has taken a lot of shots while Woodley has been resting. Woodley's speed and punching power are way bigger factors in this fight than his layoff are though.

it aint gunna help him from gettin ktfo

I think it really depends on the type of fighter he is , in terms of if he is likely to get big fight jitters or if he will be more reactive to getting hit the longer he hasn't fought .
Also if he has used his time wisely to devise a plan to beat Lawler and work on the weakness in his game that Lawler might exploit

No, he hasn't fought under the IV ban and he was already a gasser.

I think that it is more likely that the long layoff is not beneficial.

Yes but in order to balance out the IV ban now fighters have more time to hydrate which is also something to consider.

I'd like to think the biggest advantage to layoffs is that injuries can heal or a guy can get his head on straight if he's feeling scattered or whatnot inside or outside the ring.

Since 2009 though, Tyron has fought consistently at every 3-6 months, so being away this long is something of an adversary itself right alongside Robbie MF Lawler - one of the worst guys I can think of to stand in front of when having a moment of self-doubt or hesitation.

Tyron has two opponents in Atlanta that night. I hope he worked on his cardio but you can't outrun your own psychology.

Out a year and a half going into the biggest fight of his life. He's going to get fleeced.

You made very good points, Tyron before this has been an active fighter and we'll see how that affects him. Psychologically though I think he's fine just fought very stiff competition. Nate Marquardt (when tyron was 10 fights into his pro career and Nate was at the tail end of his prime) Jake Shields and Rory Mcdonald (where Tyron was completely outclassed) are not the worst people in the world to loose to.

I was also hoping in this thread for fighters that improved with a long layoff such as Nate Diaz who came back looking incredible and beating Michael Johnson.

I know it's always possible for fighters to improve over an extended lay off but some things just are what they are. Woodley has been the same fighter for better or worse since 2012 or so. Chances are he'll have the same flaws he always does so unless he gets Lawler out of there early (which with his power is possible), he's likely looking at a very unfortunate fifth round vs Lawler.

Has Woodley ever gone five rounds? I think he is in big trouble, especially against Lawler who thrives at the end of five round fights.

Do agree with this. Woodley is gonna need an early to middle rounds stoppage to win this thing. I can't envision him lasting the full 25 minutes against Lawler.

That's accurate. There is more time for rehydration before the fight now tho even with no IV. Also Lawler's habit of trying to steal rounds in the last minute or so plus the fact he tends to cruise a bit in the middle rounds may not hurt Woodley in that regard.

Cuz why else would you waste anyones time by making a topic, it's not a question if Woodley has a chance, it's a question of, "Hopefully Woodley can last to the last round so we can all witness the great rare Unicorn that is "5th Round Lawler"

That is Woodley's only purpose in this life, to last to round five, so 5th Round Lawler can emerge.
