Could talk a big game, had some nice wins over rapidly aging Lawler and inexperienced Till. Championship reign was terrible, it’s up there with Benson Henderson and Michael Bisping.

Ultimately I don’t think he was ever anything special, timing was just right for him when WW was rounding out it’s current elite guys. Helwani is gassing up his legacy so I’m interested in knowing how you all will remember his UFC run?

A good fighter who got distracted, got a god complex, tried to rap, act etc, took a loss, then another & was never able to get back on track. Weak minded.

Honestly his rapping / music was so terrible it’s all that comes to mind when I think of him. That and his strange victim complex.

Highlight reel finishes against Lawler and Till, two good scraps against Thompson, and a string of lackluster performances after. He also complained a lot and embarrassed MMA athletes on national tv

Lol the wonder boy fights were terrible to me. Even the draw simply because I knew Woodley was capable of actually finising the guy if he wanted to be intentional about it.

I never understood why Benson gets hate on his split decision wins. It was the judges call, not him. All he did was make weight, show up on fight night, and fight his heart out for fans' entertainment. He has never pulled out of a fight in his UFC career ever and faced whoever they book with him, short notice or not. I wish people appreciated him for this.
Overrated point fighter.

Transitional champion like Lawler, who tried to make the most of his moment and didn't really make it big in the process. Had a good streak for a minute, has a "w" over Wonderboy.

pretty solid fighter, should have 3 defenses instead of 4, I don't count a draw as a defense, prior to his losing streak, it's amazing that he kept winning fights by backing up against the cage minus the Rory fight

Overrated point fighter.

He has 14 finishes and 14 decision wins. 13-1 start in his WEC/UFC career. Move up a weight class on days notice and finished his opponent in there. Overrated point fighter, or the fact he's given the nod by the judges over the guys you wanted to win?

WW ATG but very boring fighter.

He was never considered the best WW in the planet, his loss to Rory and close fights with Thompson kinda ruined the aura he could have had.

Also his insanely boring fights didn't help either, it seemed he was on his path to fix those issues but he ran into Usman and it was game over, those current losses are certainly hurting him as well.

I don't think "Transitional champion" have 4 tittle defenses, I agree he was in a weird spot as a champ

Well he definitely lost to Gilbert Melendez but that’s neither here nor there I suppose. Allow me to make myself very clear here, I didn’t say he was incapable of finishing fights, I said he is an overrated point fighter and that’s his disposition toward fighting. He’s great in grappling situations but he is not going out there trying to end dudes yet he was acting big and bad as champ.

Great fighter, easily Top 10 WWs ever and maybe Top 5.

You’re not going to like my answer because it’s an obscure tangent...

...but his most lasting legacy is holding out for an undeserved* title shot, and succeeding.

The ramifications of that precedence have proven to be terrible, across multiple divisions.

*define it how you will

I'm in the minority of people who really enjoyed the first Wonderboy fight, didn't hate the 2nd one either... The card for the 1st one was one of my favourites ever, had Khabib, Frankie Edgar and Luque on the Prelims and Yoel, Conor and JJ on the Main... Ridiculous.

As for Woodley, one of the best WW ever, could have been so much more though imo.. Wish him all the best.

He was a very good fighter, and was really getting up there in all time welterweights before his really bad losing streak. Yes, he didn't exactly have an attitude that fans could appreciate, but I feel like people are getting too influenced by that to judge as fair as possible. He doesn't have a legacy that gets him into the top class, but I'd put him in a tier behind that somewhere in 5-10. To say his reign was terrible is a bit too exaggerated, it was decent at the least.
