I will start this by saying if you are watching or plan on watching spartacus this will have spoilers in it.

So onto the post; I've been watching the TV show Spartacus that came out a few years ago, I'm on the last season a few episodes deep and theres a fight between two guys (Gannicus vs Crixus) and one (Gannicus) uses some jiujitsu (gogoplata + kimura).

This isn't the first time you see some jiujitsu in the series. I think in the prequel one of the gladiators does a flying armbar.

heres a clip:

If you haven't watched the show I highly recommend it. It's very very good. The biggest downfall of the show is the actor that played Spartacus died of cancer after the first season and the new actor just isn't as good but it's still worth watching all seasons.

And they had to pick one of the lowest percentage submissions in BJJ . . . because the Gogoplata from Guard is what you'd use in a real fight rather than an armbar or just sweeping to Mount? Hmmm . . . intredasting.

haha yeah but like most things in television it has to be over the top, so why not a flashy low percentage move. Not to mention the main characters in this show can kill like 10-20 guys by themselves during battles but it's all entertainment.

They even fucked it up somehow. He's not "underhooking" the arm at all with his leg, but rather just plases it there and pulls down on the head. Easiest escape ever lol.

Don't be jelly cuz his jitz is legit bro.

Spartacus is a crappy series. More like a porn movie, and the special effects are appalling.

^Haha. I love Spartacus (as my avatar my give away) but the gratuitousness of it combined with the lack of production value certainly don't make it a good show for everyone. I mostly used it as a form of mindless entertainment, almost like background noise while I was doing something else.

There are a number of scenes throughout the series where submission grappling techniques were used, and I was amused that they tried to integrate them into the show, but they weren't especially well done.

So there you have it. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu predates the Spartans.

I thought the same thing up until about midway through the first season. The effects got a little better. Decent storyline and I'm a man so I enjoy all the violence and sex. The finale's have all been very satisfying as well instead of just leaving you hanging like most shows.

Is way better than many series that have thousand of seasons, I like Spartacus because it was short and the grappling of that time wasn

Spartacus entertained me like no other show ever did. Gratuitous sex scenes? Check. Insane fight scenes? Check. Non-stop action? Check. It's basically Gladiator mixed with 300 with more boobs (and orgies). The last episode of the first season raised my testosterone levels by at least 200%.

You might not like Spartacus, and that's fine, but you're wrong.

Can't emphasize that enough. It picks up around the 4th episode, and then... it's an epic ride.

Stephen DeKnight (Spartacus showrunner) has also recently agreed to be the showrunner for the 2015 Netflix Daredevil series, which seems tailor-made for some BJJ action.

All I have to say is that Gannicus is a fucking boss.

If you want violence and sexual content in a historic setting then Game of Thrones is infinitely better. It actually has a good plot.

Interesting to see these techniques existed in ancient Greece.

Spartacus tv series was shot in Auckland. Most stutmen were kiwi?

Perfect summary. Spartacus was a badass show and I miss it. Planning to rewatch the whole series again soon.

I watch GOT and its a good show, has more production value (bigger budget) and a more "deep" storyline but Spartacus was way more entertaining. Hell, I don't even remember the last time I saw some nudity in GOT haha.

It took me almost 2 seasons to even know who half the characters in GOT.
