Powerful enough to shoot down Russian jets, ha!
There's lots of violence occurring daily in the US. There are terrorists attacks constantly in Russia. Are you saying they're not powerful countries?
Turkey has a major Kurd population that want independence, I'd say Turkey has some major problems going for it at the moment.
Its important to remember the Turks were the military backbone of this region before Western hegemony spread to the Middle East and it wasn't that long ago historically speaking(at least a century, maybe more). They have the 9th largest army in terms of active personnel at about half a million and trail the 8th, Iran, by only 10,000.Yeah...it has problems. How does that make it not regionally powerful? They have a good military--for the area. Most of those Arab countries are a joke.

Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey under the fought in the First World War as a commanding officer IIRC. Granted, it was a while ago and the Ottomans were already weak and only hanging by then because the powers in Europe decided to make a truce and not invade anymore of their lands. But being able to fight and win battles in the WW1 is a lot more than many armies can say they, especially in that region of the world."We wuz Ottomans n shiet"
