Hi Everyone,

Lately i find myself wondering if i am being technical enough during grappling. I dont want to plug the holes in my game by using attributes like speed or strength, but at the same i dont want to be so relaxed that i get run over. Against someone of my own size and skill i just can't seem to find that middle ground. Perhaps like Andreh Anderson says in this article, i am trying to relax to much.

Or maybe i just need to use speed and strength in the right places.

just focus on the basic movements on the techniue and go from there

I think I had this same issue recently when competing at NAGA in Atlanta....I was working on getting my cardio up by rolling for periods, sometimes 45 mins. at a time. The problem with this type of training is, you aren't really forced to 'push' your game. I would often stay very relaxed looking for openings and opportunities instead of really trying to finish the match. I had the attitude that I would 'eventually' catch them with something, and I usually did...eventually. The problem with that is, in a tourny where you only have 5-6 min. matches, you really don't have the time to fight this way. That is a great point, that if you aren't attacking, you are defending, and if you're defending, you're losing....

dude, like rickson gracie once said "you are here to learn jiu jitsu... your explosiveness, your strength, your speed can be learned better somewhere else.. What i can teach you is how to use jiu jitsu. Even if you never came to me, you will be as fast as you are, as strong as you are, and as athelethic as you are. You are paying money to learn the techniques of jiu jitsu.. So why now use the skills and atributes i teach you instead of the ones you already have?"

btw, you train differenty for tournaments than you would train during non tourney season.

the last sentence is throwing me off...

nvm, I think "why now" was supposed to be "why not", right blanko?

i like to roll easy on some days and hard on others, it really depends on my mood (my teacher calls me anti-christo :icon_twis on the hard days) with that said there is usually some guy in the gym who tend to roll with more ferocity than others. So try to relax and be technical but remember to EXPLODE when necessary

Just slow things down (especially if you are using the gi). Don't worry about being run over in practice when you are working a new part of your game, that is what practice is for.
