I have limited high school wrestling experiance. Most of my backround is in Jiu jitsu but I was approached by someone from a baptist college that wants me to try out for the wrestling team. I will get a full ride at the college if I make the team and have to august to get ready for the team tryout.

So any recommendatios on drills I should be doing? As far as what online sources I can use for takedowns and drills. I will also be drilling some things with wrestlers. I plan to put in three to four hours at five days a week on this goal. I am just looking for advice from Sherdogs that are good wrestlers or coaches.

Here is some good stuff but if you have limited wrestling experience I suggest you pick a couple of moves from neutral, top and bottom and drill them 200 times a day.

You can never do enough penetration shots, stanups or sprawls.

If you don't mind me asking what college is this?

IM surprised a college would give a full ride to soemone who hasn't won or placed high at states, Beast of the East, Ironman or Nationals.

There are only 85 Division ! programs and they are only able to give 9.9 scholarships over a 4 year period and I would be surprised if half of the 85 programs are fully funded.

Let me make it clear I have by no means made the team just was asked to try out. It is a new program for bapitist university in texas. I still have to try out but I am going to come in the best shape I can in august and capitalise on the opportunity. If I don't make it atleast I put in a great effort and will have no regrets.

A full ride would be a good thing. From my neck of the woods not many of the state champs get any type of scholarship for wrestling. Hell... even a lot of the New England champs dont get scholarships.

I don't know anything about wrestling, all i have is to wish you good luck and all the best, hope you get that tryout down!

The pace of a wrestling match is a little more aggressive and explosive than the slow burn of jiu-jitsu.

For technique start with takedowns and escapes. And for strength, power-cleans will enhance your explosiveness.

That is what Im saying there are 85 Division 1 programs and 10 shoarships per school over a 4 year period 1 per weight.

Now that is what the NCAA allows meaning a max of 850 Scholarships over 4 years.

The amount of fully funded program is not that high so being generious I would say that there are about 650 full scholarships available for Division 1 over a 4 year period.

There are 14 weightclasses in Highschool times 50 states is 700 state champs a year.

I know guys that have won PA states once or even twice that were only given partial scholarships. And Pa is the best wrestlign state.

To get a full ride you usually have to be a state champ in PA, OH, NJ or win Ironman, Beast of the East, Reno, Super 32, Freestyle Nationals.

There are guys that walk onto teams and earn a scholarship later on.

Sounds like I face an uphill battle. Its a great motivator for me. If I do not make it the worst thing that will happen is I end up with a nice take down for Jiu Jitsu. I think the big thing will be practice, practice, practice and having cardio as well as muscle endurance. I would regret NOT trying out and thinking of what could have been. If anything this is a great way for me to get excited about grappling again.

Where do you live currently?

I might be abel to tell you some clinics to check out or freestyle clubs

I sent you a pm with a few places I could attend.

Odd school, kinda late to still be having tryouts. We just had our first dual.

Good luck man. Sounds like you have the right attitude going in. It'll be definitely a great workout. I wish I could turn back time and wrestled in college (wrestled 3 years in HS).

I hear you.... Not a lot of wrestling scholarships out there. And D1 wrestling seems to be getting only smaller :(

It was getting smaller but a couple of programs have started back up recently.

Off the top of my head I know Bucknell started a program.

I think MMA is really going to help college wrestling survive.

This year Worlds got TV time and a good amount of coverage and it wasn't even an Olympic Year.

ESPN also gave the NCAAs the best coverage they have ever given.

It would have been nice if soem of the guys had opened up mor ein the finals.

outside of Caldwell vs Metcalf and surprisingly the HW finals there were a lot of snoozers.

HAHA

I dont even know if Iowa is top 5 in HS Wrestling.

The best wrestlers they had over the past decade were Metcalf (Michigan) and Perry (Wrestled for Blair from Jersey but is from Oklahoma)

Pratice alot of sprawl's, i'm not really sure anyplace online that you would be able to learn throw's, the best thing I can guess is Expertvillage.com? possibly. Personally I think you'll enjoy the fast pace of Wrestling, I always did :], best of luck.

My guess is he's talking about Wayland Baptist University. The school is in Plainview, Texas and just announced the addition of a wrestling program to start the 2010-2011 season. The school is also NAIA, so there is a huge difference from NCAA no matter what the division.

If this is the case your best bet is to find a school you can practice with currently, even if its the local high school. Even if you do make it, I wouldn't count on the full-ride scholarship. Its likely the scholarship will be nominal at best. Recruiters often make promises that the admissions and finance departments won't back.
