I asked a question a long time ago, about how to do the Kyokushin rolling kick. I'm pretty sure I got no replies. (Thanks a lot guys)

Well, I made an attempt to teach myself over the past month or so, but then recently, I stumbled across this. It's an absolutely sick kick used in Kyokushin circuits and Japanese Pro Wrestling. Kind of a low-percentage move, but I've seen knockouts with it, and for MMA guys, it's a great kick to throw if you have particularly good leg locks or open guard, because you end up in that position.

Give it a shot. It's a cool-ass kick, and if you practice the timing right, you just might get a KO with it.

Flash movie of the above technique

The full name for the kick is the Yoko Kaiten Do Mawashi Kaiten Geri. But "side rolling kick" is pretty easy to say.

Bah. Now I'm sitting here looking at all these pictures of Kyokushin fights. I really wish I had a dojo near me where I could cross train. The kicks are just awesome.

I don't like that kick because I don't see myself getting any power out of it. It doesn't look like you can put your hips into it too much. Plus I friggin hate kicks in standup fights that always leave the kicker on the ground. Its not fair to the other fighter as he can't counter the move. Any move where the fighter purposely falls to the ground shouldn't be allowed.

That said Kyokushin is as legit as a martial art can get. I've seen a few world championships and those fighters are as tough as any boxer or MMA fighter.

The ones I've seen ending in KO usually involve momentum of some type. Either the opponent was charging into the kicker or the kicker did it while rushing or springing into the opponent.

I'm pretty sure in stand up competitions, if you slip/fall not due to a strike, the judges score negatively if you don't immediately return to your feet. I think I read that in a Muay Thai book. So I think it's fine if it's a once in a while thing. It'd be a different story if a fighter continually used moves like that in a match and stalled on the ground.

How can you not think you will get power from a kick where you do a front flip? It's definately a very hard kick. It's a cool kick but I also do think it's kind of cheap in a stand up fight, it puts you on the ground where your opponent can't counter it even though you leave yourself wide open.

Cool-looking and probably effective if thrown right..but very risky and, in my opinion, wholly unnecessary. What Okinawan karate guys call a wheel kick (known to me in TKD as a backswing kick) delivers at least as much, if nore more, power while keeping the guy throwing it off the ground and ready to transition to another technique if it fails.

The kick looks like an opportunity shot to end a fight, so I'm not surprised the practitioner would commit himself so fully to landing it. Just better hope it lands.

looks a tad bit risky for me. maybe i'll try it while shaowboxing.

That's pretty sweet. If you did that in the ring/octagon fans would remember. "Hey, you're that dude that did that sweet kick. That was pretty ballsy".

Looks like a fun move to try. It'd definetly be unexpected and could do some damage even if blocked.

check out the wooden floor, and bjj guys think they are tough while they train on mats. I think i've seen Genki Sudo try something like that.

throwing that kick in san shou can make you lose due to losing points from touching the floor with your body, unless you ko the guy. Or you can actually land on your feet like that, which should be possible if you are acrobatic enough

I wouldnt think so....with the momentum you build up in the flip; thats where you get your power....if you simply jump and do a somersault in the air with your leg out, you will get no power behind it.....

I dont look at any kick as useless though...and at the very least its something to make the other guy think.

Theres plenty of power behind it dont worry. Great looking kick, I'll practice it a bit tomorrow when i do some shadow boxing to let you guys know how it goes, im not sure i'll be able to pull it off easily but ill definatly give it a try.

Albert Kraus got hit really hard with a kick like that at the very end of the first round, he was fighting against a mongolian Kyokushinkaika and judging by the way he was rocked by that strike I rwally thing he would have lost that fight had that been in the middle of the round.

Isnt that about the same kick Minowa tried on Crocop? It looks kind of like a spinning hook kick but also kind of like a somersalt kick.

Lechi Kurbanov likes to throw that kind of kicks. You can find highlights of him on google and youtube if you want to see the kick in action.

Yeah. He did throw that kick. I think Genki has as well.

ive seen Genki use that kick a bunch of times. yes its cheap for an all standup fight, but in MMA its a really cool kick if u can pull it off. if u miss tho u look like an idiot.

Machs kick looks like a failed tKD-style jmp spinning hook kick.

looks more like he was too close and didn't get the rotation to land on his back. Kciked the guy with the side of his leg...

And the guy STILL went down from it.
