Washington (CNN)Almost half of Americans who watched President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address -- 48% -- say they had a "very positive" impression of the speech, down from 57% of speech-watchers after his first address to match Barack Obama's rating after his first State of the Union address, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

It's the lowest net positive rating for a State of the Union address since at least 1998, when CNN first asked the question. There is no equivalent poll for addresses before 1998.

The lowest net positive rating for a State of the Union in at least 20 years!!!

This is going to eat Trump alive. I look forward to the tweets.

People who are happy with their lives enjoyed the speech.

lol at "CNN poll." What were the Fox news numbers?

It's going to be a long three years for you Homer, a very long three years.

Whatever gets your juices flowing

It seems like you can find a poll to support whatever you want nowadays

Most people don't understand discourse and how its used as a weapon. They're also not capable of deciphering speeches, law or executive orders, so its not surprising to me that 48% viewed Trumps speech as favorable. I'm honestly surprised this isn't more of a headline:

"Trump is calling for an end to any semblance of independence for the IRS, the FBI, the Department of Justice, or any other federal agency."

I wonder how his supporters will justify the slide into authoritarianism.

I haven't had that experience at all really. Polls that are up to industry standards all pretty much get the same answers to the same questions.

It was favorable in contrast to recent administration behavior, so by the Asshole Effect (this is what I call it when you start off by being an asshole, then lay off) any reasonable action by Trump gets extra favorable responses.

Wouldnt that be a win for him considering 2/3 dislike him in general
