If it is loans and they are paying us back, there's no good reason not to sell them hardware to fight extremists. I ask this because Pakistan says it's counterproductive, and I would guess that it is counterproductive because they're using loans to buy our hardware to fight extremists.

We do get something in return from Pakistan. They are strategically located and also help, sort of, in the WOT. Relinquishing our patron status with them opens up other countries like China to fill in that void.

But I still agree with Trump here. The Pakistanis are pretty shoddy allies in the WOT and the aid money that gets sent over there only empowers the oppressive intelligence-military apparatus that rules the country. I often rail against the West for supporting oppressive regimes so it'd be hypocritical of me to criticize Trump here even if his rationale likely has nothing to do with human rights or democracy.
