In the early-to-mid 1800's the vast majority of the world's population were farmers. Yes being giver hundreds to thousands of acres of prime farmland with the added bonus of guaranteed military protection is about as close to you could possibly get to a free ride in the early-to-mid 1800's.
Hundreds to thousands of acres of prime farmland? You're loopy. How the hell would you tend more than a few acres solely by hand with an ox and plow, man? Jesus. You think they were farming hundreds or thousands of acres? Out tearing it up on their John Deere Tractor, were they?
