I don't think there's ever been four hype trains so obviously manufactured by UFC brass in such a short period of time, let alone all four being derailed quickly. Agree or disagree?

I've never heard it called that yet. Why would that change in the future ?

I would add Aldo to the list, althought to be fair he was only hyped by himself and his fans, the UFC were largely indifferent

but the p4p #1 getting ktfo in 13 seconds. thats a derailment if ever i saw one

I don't like Aldo but it's hard to describe his unbeaten run of (8 years?) a hype train derailment

It was a derailment of a champ, not a hype train. Aldo wasn't hyped up by the UFC at all, which is what a hype train is in this case.

You could say the same for Conor and Ronda then.

Yes they were champs. They were also hype trains. The UFC prioritized marketing them above any other fighters. You could not say this of Aldo when he was champ. To say otherwise would be idiotic.

The ufc used to say Aldo was #2 pound for pound, unbeaten in 8 years (against weak competition)

For me if you've reached the realm of being a champion, I can't call it a hype train. Sage, Randy Brown, PVZ, ect. Those I would consider hype trains.

Calling Conor a hype is retarded.
He went true the best of the best *except for frankie*, and ko'd or tko'd everyone except for one guy.
I would never call that hype, the only hype around him was that people started to believe he could also clean out 155/170.
Yea that part has been derailed, I still believe if Conor wants to he would hold the 145 belt as long as he wants.

Well we can agree to disagree then, but for me a hype train is anyone who the company makes a concerted effort to push as either the face of the company or next big thing above all the other talent. Sometimes it's newer talent like Sage/paige, sometimes more proven like Conor or Ronda - but what all hype trains have in common is the agenda from the brass to be pushed into the public eye and forefront of the company. Somebody like Aldo, who doesn't speak English, would have a hard time being a hype train if you ask me.

I wouldnt have Ronda or Conor on the list..

Ronda did beat everyone they put in front of her, including the current champ twice.. as above, its not a hype train derail, its a champ ktfo
Same with Conor, he beat the champ of 10 years in 13 seconds, that, and the fact he is still the champ overweighs him losing to Diaz in a freakshow fight..

The only real two are Sage and Paige

I think also with a derailment you have to look ahead and work out if they can recover.. Conor certainly will, and hes still the champ, Ronda quite possibly will, and even with Sage I think down the line we will see the Sage train back on the tracks again and winning

Which really only leaves Paige

That was the only totally dominated, face smashing, possibly UFC career ending, aint never recoving from, sent down to the second division type beatdown that happened

I still call it hype. Hype can be deserved or undeserved, and everything in between. Sage certainly didn't deserve the hype he got. Conor, debatably deserved it, or most of it, depending on whom you ask.

sage and paige barely count. No one really believed they were anything special, they just hoped. An experiment.

Again I disagree. It can be deseved hype, but still a hype train if the UFC makes it a point to push those fighters onto the forefront above all else.

Hype to me has more to do with the company's marketing agenda than anything the fighter does themselves.

Ronda got hyped for sure but her train has hardly been derailed: she's lost once and destroyed all other opponents.

False.

It stands to reason. The significance of the fighter "media/ marketing" portion of the UFC stars has increased dramatically and is currently at by far the highest level it has ever been.

Prior to TUF, there was rarely a passing thought given to an MMA fighters "personality". There really was only one major media monster in the early Zuffa UFC, and that was Tito Ortiz. The biggest UFC names prior to TUF were either non-polarizing personalities or at minimum media "awkward" fighters.

I don't remember the majority top fighters at the time ie. Hughes, GSP, Liddell, Couture, Ace, AA & Timmeh putting serious "mic" time in like todays group.

With considerably more HYPE in play, there will continue to be more and more hype train derailment. Sorry TS, IMO it "Media/ marketing" of fighters will get far worse going forward rather than back to fighters "speaking entirely by their action in the Octagon".
