I always try to scoot my hips and pull guard but im not sure if its my flexibility fucking me over or something. but it would be nice to hear different variations of side control escapes

Get a good frame first. Make it uncomfortable for the guy on top.

i think part of my problem is i allow my arm to get isolated so its very difficult to get my arm between us and make space for advances

There are no escapes from side control which won't be troublesome. It is like asking for an escape to a triangle which won't be troublesome.

Like above posters said, if they have you flattened out in side-control then you fucked up a lot of stuff before that which you should address first. You don't ask your coach how to escape a triangle you ask how to prevent it.

One of my favorite videos on escaping side control.

yes i agree, but im not an expert and will occasionally be stuck in these positions. which calls for me to know some defense. Prevention is the first step, but everyone needs a back up plan. some moves are just hard to predict. but i do plan on asking my instructor but a second opinion does not hurt

hand on hip, underhook, shrimp to half guard- always create space
