Anybody know the lapel choke that Travis Stevens hit against Shiloh Roberts on Saturday at the World Jiu-jitsu Expo? I thought it was pretty nifty, and TrumpetDan mentions that he hadn't seen it before. Perhaps it's something from Stevens' judo days?

Basically, it looked to me like (from the back) he wrapped the tail of his own lapel around the back of Roberts' neck, caught it with his other hand, then switched his hips into an armbar position and extended his legs.

For those of you that paid for the stream, the match ends around 4:07:25 into the replay on Saturday.

And here's me and my teammate's demonstration video. One thing that I think he could have done to make the choke tighter and more positionally sound (that Stevens does) is to tighten his knees together instead of leaving them open, just like in an armbar.

If no one finds footage of the actual match, I'll film myself doing it on someone in class tomorrow and post it here. No explanation or anything, just me repping the choke a few times.

ask him on facebook, hes really responsive to peoples questions on there

Good idea, I hadn't thought of asking him about it. And I don't think it's the same as a Gerbi choke. My impression of the Gerbi choke was that it needed an arm to be in, like a Peruvian necktie. I don't think Stevens' choke used an arm-in to finish, I think it was all lapel.

I asked Travis about it last night on Facebook, and he wasn't aware of a video that taught it, but he did share a couple of details with me and told me to feel free to ask him if I had any questions.

From Travis: "When your passing the collar make sure you fully pull it out and make a swimming motion with your arm you will see me do it in the video. That's the biggest mistake people make. Extending the arm and making the swimming motion really helps expand the gi so you can easily swing the leg over the head for the finish"

Good news: I drilled the choke tonight with my buddy. It's super tight and seems very difficult to defend. I really like it and look forward to adding to my game.

Bad news: I forgot that I was going film it for you guys until after we had already started cleaning the mats, so it'll have to wait until either judo tomorrow or sometime on Saturday night.

I just watched it on the Keenan DVD

It's a reverse brabo choke from the back a la the one in Jiu jitsu university with 2 variations
First variation is using the opponents loose lapel and handing it over to choke
Second variation is going to arm at position and using your legs to push the elbow across

Very cool concept and position

Sorry I haven't posted the video yet, guys. I'm planning to film it tonight and upload it when I get home.

Mikey, where in JJ University did you see it? I looked around a bit last night and couldn't find it, but I didn't really know what to look for. A page number would be great if you have the book handy.

It's a variation of the weird choke in the back section- the one where you grab the elbow and pull it
My book is in storage right now
Amazon lets you look inside- p.328 36-3

The OP now has video!

Good call, Mikey. I see some similarities. The JJU choke uses uke's own collar across the neck and arm to face, where Stevens' choke uses his lapel fed around the neck and his leg across the face instead, but the choking mechanism is essentially the same.
