A recent study published by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown tackles the subject of trash-talking and its effect on activities.

The study is long but here is a summary:
Trash-talking influences competitive behavior. Trash-talking is a common form of competitive incivility in the workplace. When individuals are targets of trash-talking, they become more motivated and perform better on effort-based tasks. We find that perceptions of rivalry explain the link between trash-talking and performance, and show that targets of trash- talking develop a stronger preference to see their opponent lose.

So, can we surmise that fighters proficient in shit-talking are getting the most prepared/focused version of their opponent? (even Cabo Nate?)

It didn't help Aldo.
That’s the interesting part. Certainly, some people will wilt from shit-talking but, overall, it brings motivation out of us. Aldo might just be recessive in that regard.

It definitely makes them more aggressive for sure. That can make or break the fight. If your up against a counter-puncher and fall into the mind games your toast.

May be the exception to the rule.

It helped guys like Dillashaw, Silva etc.

The agression that was created by the trash talk caused Aldo to lead against a known counter-puncher which even a rookie knows not to do. So it helped conor in the end. Nevertheless, we are talking about a KO so once your brain gets rattled trash talk or not you will be unconscious.

Most definitely helped McGregor, but the point of the study was how it may help targets of trash talk with additional motivation etc.

Yea I know I was about to come back here and edit cause I was way off topic but yes it definitely does help out in the gym and stuff.

I’m trying to think of other brash shit-talkers he faced in the past but nothing comes to mind. Holloway and Edgar were petty respectful, iirc.

I think for the most part it's a load of bollocks.

I find the press conferences now are like mini amateur roasts the way they set them up now with 10 or 12 fighter's on the dais and then you add in the MMA writers who mix it up when they ask a fighter about his thoughts on what his opponent said about him. Folk are almost scoring the pressers and claiming a fighter is 'rattled'

I think if a fighter genuinely hates their opponent, they're more prone to trying too hard to knock the opponents head off. Get an adrenaline dump. Make reckless mistakes, etc. But on the other hand, I think it all depends on the fighter on the receiving end of the shit talk and how they handle it.

There's other factors like injuries and personal problems that we don't know about which could also be at play.

I disagree especially after Joanna's last shindig, she looked like a complete fucking clown at the weigh ins with those dumbass looking sunglasses on inside a building, that is the new trash mouth which is somebody that is so dumb they don't know if they are outside at the beach or inside getting their license renewed.
Let's not even get into the dumbass shit she was saying, I am so pissed off at her but very happy for Rose for putting her in her damn place, hopefully she will look at herself during some of those interviews and say to herself "If I have to be that idiot to please the casual fan the fuck the casual fan"
I mean maybe it brought the best out of Rose but I think Rose ignored her goofy ass and then whipped it is what I think. Looking like an idiot then getting your ass whipped does not seem like the best coming out

Science studies prove nothing

It changes every time a new study comes out

But keep blindly believing the men you've never met in a white lab coat who tell you a different story every year.

It can give motivation. But, for some ppl they become too emotional. And, that adversely affects performance sometimes.

If you chuck your whole gameplan down the shitter. Then you might be fucked. Plus especially in something like combat sports. Alot of it is just trying to sell the fight. Or bravado to mask the shit talker’s own fears.

It’s best to just let it roll off your back. Especially in a single person sport. As opposed to team sports. Too much emotion is detrimental.

Doesn't help with skill... maybe hurts skill based tasks sometimes.

Merry Christmas!

To start, I asked a question, I didn't say they were right. Second, it's social sciences so not sure they would be wearing a white lab coat.

This forum likes to discuss being triggered and shit-talking (i.e. getting someone 'rattled'), I simply pointed to a study. You seem like a queef, personified.

If it's like most of these kind of studies, it probably shows that a few more people did a little better with shit talking than those who didn't. Far cry from improving performance across the board.

Maybe it works sometimes.

GSP beat the dog piss out of Serra and Fitch and they didn't trash talk him.

Silva styled on Forest Griffin. No trash talking.

It probably helps unless the target of trash talking 100% don’t give a shit what the other person feels or thinks of them.

Deep down, many ppl don’t.
