A recent study published by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown tackles the subject of trash-talking and its effect on activities.

Trash-talking influences competitive behavior. Trash-talking is a common form of competitive incivility in the workplace. When individuals are targets of trash-talking, they become more motivated and perform better on effort-based tasks. We find that perceptions of rivalry explain the link between trash-talking and performance, and show that targets of trash- talking develop a stronger preference to see their opponent lose.
