US officials say the Pentagon will lift its ban on openly transgender service personnel next month.

Defence Secretary Ash Carter has called the regulation outdated and harmful to the military.

The disclosure has been welcomed by campaigners for transgender rights.

It comes after the US Army Secretary, Eric Fanning, formally took office. He is the first openly gay person to become the top civilian official in any branch of the American military.

The US military ended its ban on openly gay and lesbian service personnel in 2011.

The latest repeal would require each branch of the US military to implement new policies covering recruitment, housing and uniforms for transgender personnel, an official quoted by US media said.

What do you think? Step in the right direction towards acceptance or political pandering that weakens the fighting force?

I think if someone is mentally and physically able to serve their country, we ought to allow them to.

That said, good luck. I can't imagine too many trans people in the military not getting harassed in an extreme way.

Women want to be in the infantry...if they can meet the standards...awesome. Standards have to be equal though. If people are unfamiliar, male and female standards differ. Usmc male standards equals 20 pull ups. Women, 60 seconds hang from a bar. Anyways, having a transgender man as a female in the military basically contradicts the idea of women can be infantry and be held to proper standards.

as long as they aren't making VA claims for disability afterwards, or especially not be able to use Tricare while in to fund hormones or any other elective bullshit

I think allowing mentally ill people into the military is no good.

Where do men go who are weakening their body? Where do women go who will never be as strong as men after their surgery? It's a weak area of the armed forces.

Enjoy your infusion of two dozen more soldiers American armed forces. You earned it.

They also get 3 more minutes on the run. It's much easier to do 3 miles in 21:00 instead of 18:00.

They're just getting rid of an outdated rule. I doubt there'll be a huge influx of transgender applicants.

There aren't that many transgenders anyway. Not right now. I've seen only 2 in my life.

I look for that number increase a lot in the next 5 years and then more in the next 10 because our govt has really popularized it and encouraged it.

I will say that this will be a disaster for the military where it happens.

I am guessing it will be female to male applicants. And probably not male to female applicants. I can't see many females meeting the standards. But I guess if they are taking testosterone and hormones, that will help them pass the physical tests. But on the battlefield, are they always gonna have their testosterone medications?

That's an interesting point. Does a female to male trans have to meet the female or male standards.
I would be inclined to say they should have to meet the male standards.

What if someone's gender-fluid? I could identify as a male most of the time but then as a female and go by their standards on the PFT. :D

Where did all those transgender issues come from? I mean how many % of the population area transgenders? And how many % of those want to join the military? And how many % of those are able to meet the basic requirement?

The military doesn't have anything better to do than dealing with those complete irrelevant issue? Thailand for example has lots of Transgender compared to the US, and they even have mandatory military service, but the military just says fuck it we don't have time to deal with the issue, transgenders just cant join.

Both sides of the media make it sound like there are those millions of transgenders either being discriminated or try to rape our children in public bathrooms. Where are all those transgender people that is is even an issue?

transgender suicide rate naturally standing at 40+%

i wonder what a post war transgender suicide rate will be.

The issue is that you do not want mentally ill people in your military. I know that sounds harsh but it's true.

There probably will be if the start using taxes to pay for the surgeries.

In the interests of fairness, what other mental illnesses are they going to allow soldiers to have and serve?

If you're going to be fair, then it should be said that with the introduction of the DSM5 there is no longer a general disorder based solely on gender identity disparities. It's now gender dysphoria, which means that the individual would need to be distressed specifically about their gender identity. Distress or depression as a result of stigmatization or just run of the mill depression.

Regardless of that though, rates of mental health issues are huge in transgender peoples. Whether they are based on the gender issues or other wise, I don't think we'll see a lot, if any, trans people making it through selection.

It should be really good to have a person suffering psychosis in the military.
