Background: I recently got kicked in the ribs in muay thai class. Hard. On the side (45 degree angle I would guess). I went down and it fuckin hurt, BAD. It didnt get any better at all for about a week, then over 2 days it stopped hurting - the following morning when I woke up I got up sortof like doing a pushup but keeping my hips on the bed (imagine the cobra position in yoga) and felt (and HEARD) a pop in my ribs. Then it started hurting again, but in a broader area. And now it hurt from the compacting muscular motion (the injury is on the left, and it hurts when I use the muscles to compress the left side of my core). The re-injury was about a week ago and it still hurts. There are the details.

ANYWAYS the point of the question - What do you guys do about training through minor/medium injuries? I saw online that diego sanchez got a similar injury to me and he pulled out of a fight, so I dont know if this is minor (since the pain stopped after a week) or a bit more serious. I have allready taken over a month and a half off because of a previous minor knee injury and mid-terms at school (Im a college student in a hardcore program) and feel like a moron paying my gym membership and not going to class. But on the other hand I dont want to re-injure myself and miss MORE time.

Sounds like youve seperated the cartilidge in your ribs. I'm having the same thing right now. Its not the first time. These things take time to heal. Basically what I've leanred over time and talking to my doctor is wait till it doesn't hurt at all. And then wait another week.

As far as the gym dues go . Talk to your instructor. Whenever i've had something that was going to take while to heal I get my dues suspended till I'm healed.

I say do whats right for your body. Don't goto the gym just for the sake of getting your moneys worth because your paying. Maybe just try some light grappling and tell your training partner your injured and to not target that area. Maybe roll 10% and loosen your body up before hand.

yeah I'm just concerned that if I injured it GETTING OUT OF BED what will happen when a training parter has a millisecond of lapse of judgement?

while were on the subject, i tore the ligiments around my collor bone causing my shoulder to seperate, its been 3 weeks which is what to doctor said to take off from training, my shoulder is back up where is should be but it still achs once and awhile and im just scared im gonna go back and hurt it right away, has anyone had any experience with the same problems?

I'd see a doctor.

As tough as it is to miss some time off, you don't want to over train and potentially miss like... a year off.

Dude, if your rib is damaged from a kick and hurting like hell just sitting still.... imagine what's going to happen when someone puts their shin and all their weight on your ribs, or mounts you and bounces up and down for discomfort

I cracked ribs a few months ago from being thrown, man there's just SO many ways to hurt the ribs. I would really take it easy if I were you.

::shiver::

Remember - better to train only 3 days a week all year round rather than train 5 days a week and get hurt and take months off at a time

I tend to get injured a lot. I wonder if i just put myself in stupid/ dangerous situations or if my body is just more susceptible to injuries.

Bro, I am currently going through healing from a cracked rib cartilage.

My rib is poping out of my rib cage. It cracked while my chest was being crushed while rolling.

Orthopedic doctor's opinion --> it is just a minor crack of the cartilage.

A SEPARATED cartilage occur while major impact such as car accident.

I think the OP rather pulled an intercostal muscle....

Hey, OP, go do X-Rays instead of speculating on a grappling forum. Then see an orthopedic specialist.

often its hard to tell whether you popped cartilage or aggravated a hairline fracture or just have really bad bruising.

+1 to seeing a doctor. In the most mild case, he will palpate it a little, test your range of motion, tell you he thinks its bruised or popped cartilage and will tell you to ice/heat it, give you ibuprofen, and tell you to stay off of it and call him if you have any problems.

But better to be safe than sorry. Rather be out for 2-3 weeks and pay a doctors visit rather than end up with some f****d up shit, pay for surgeries and hospital care, and not be able to roll for like a yr.
