Does anyone use training journals and if you do could you please advise me on mine?
I have MMA on Mondays and Wednesdays. I have no idea what to do on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My goals are to train and gym for a year and then head to compete (I'm 21 with no previous experience in any form of martial arts). I'm 5'1'' please don't laugh and weigh 132lbs.

Journal for MMA and strength/conditioning or just an MMA journal? Almost everyone here has a training log and I highly recommend it. You should also read the FAQ's. A lot of useful info there.

Do you train striking and grappling any other times, or just "MMA" twice a week?

Dude, nobody here is gonna laugh at you for your size. Neither will any instructor/classmate worth a damn. You play the hand you're dealt. Train smart, train hard, reap the rewards like everybody else.:)

Using a Journal Log is the only way to go, Started mine in 1979

I've never thought about putting mine in a 3 ring binder. Ive just used spiral notebooks. You sir, have inspired me yet again.

I like to keep a list of goals on the inside cover and a running list of maxes on the last page.

Since we're living in the 21st century, I use my phone to log all my lifts. I'm considering starting a Sherdog Training log.

Well at our gym, theres no real structure to what we do on which day. I can go train on Tuesdays and Thursdays too. I will look into those training logs you guys have thanx. Just one more question. Is it a MUST to lift iron, or is bodyweight programs enough?

I just do MMA twice a week, but I can go four times a week if I want to. Unfortunately where I live, there isn't other gyms for boxing and so on. Only MMA and karate. I can only afford going to MMA..

Depends upon your personal goals, your current fitness level, etc.

If you want to be stronger? Yes, it's recommended.

Go train MMA 4x a week then, get as much training in martial arts as you can, the more experienced you get the more you'll realize how much more training you need in what areas before you start fighting. Personally I wouldnt feel confident getting in the cage with only 1 year of training

My name is KnightTemplar...and I'm a Journal-aholic.

I have a weight training journal I take to the Gym with me, and a Training Log on Sherdog. I have a Running Log for my twice weekly jogging sessions and finally a Martial Arts log in which I record how many times I got my ass kicked at BJJ, Kickboxing and Kali.

Training logs are very useful, especially if, like myself, you have the memory of goldfish. They help you to identify what works and what does'nt.

As to what other types of training you can do, that depends on your goals. Given your size, my immediate reaction was to snarl, "SS, motherfucker, have you heard of it?!" but you may not want to bulk up. Let us know what your goals are and what, if any previous experience you've had with strength training, and maybe we can help.

For a modest fee, of course.:icon_twis

I'm actually completely new to any form of martial art. I'm 21 now and lost many years that could have trained. I would like to compete, not sure when. Also feeling very let down of all the negative comment on my length in the striking technique thread. I'm clueless on what im supposed to do workout wise and i dont have access to a gym for lifting weights. Our dojo teaches a whole bunch of random things mma related, but theres no structure to it.

Where do you live. I am a firm believer that MMA should not be the first combat sport one participates in. At 21 it's too late for wrestling, but boxing, MT, BJJ are options. Have you looked for options outside your immediate radius?

I just read that thread.

You know what all those negative comments mean? Nothing whatsoever. Those guys don't know you and they don't have a crystal ball. All sorts of variables play into your potential success -- some of them you can control, some of them you can't.

For right now, concentrate on having fun, working hard and learning as much as you can. When it's time to compete, you'll know.

And even if the haters turn out to be right and you aren't a successful MMA competitor, you may enjoy MMA so much that you just train and spar in the dojo and that's enough. Or your training may lead you to other things you enjoy even more -- other combat sports, other athletic endeavors, other career possibilities, etc. Who knows?

The thing that totally hinders a lot of people is, they get involved in an activity they love and they end up deciding "if I can't become rich and famous doing this, I am a failure." That's bullshit. You should consider yourself a success every time you spend one second doing something you love. Put in the time and the sweat and see where the path takes you. It's sure as hell a more constructive way to spend your time than sitting on the couch with an X-box in one hand and a sammich in the other.
