Yesterday I was rolling in my BJJ class and this guy had me in his guard. I stood up to pass and I either tripped or he sweeped me (it all happened too fast) and the next thing I know, I'm falling and I instinctively put my hand down and instead of landing palm down on the ground, somehow I land right on my thumb. There was a loud crack. Like the sound of someone cracking their knuckles but like 5 times louder. And I was in pain. I quit rolling for the day because I knew something was wrong with my thumb.

So I waited until this afternoon to go to the doctor's place. I had my thumb x-rayed and it turns out that I have a fracture (break). I got it in a splint now, and it will take 4-6 weeks to heal. This means no rolling for 4-6 weeks, which seriously blows. I'll be able to do warm-ups and practice the techniques (for the most part), but I won't be able to roll for at least a month. The fact that I'm pretty stoned from the pain pills doesn't make it any less shitty.

What kind of injuries have you gotten while training (rolling)?

I messed up my thumb pretty bad last week, and my toe, and my tailbone........injuries are forever in this game. In the past i really could go on for hours about different injuries.. almost everyday i leave i have something small new.. some days big.

I have trained through all of them but im sure it will have its ups and downs. I think im going to take a little time off to let my tailbone heal. It has been the most annoying non serious injury ive had in my life. The pain isnt bad enough to not train but its constant.. it gets worse when i sit.. and im sitting all day long.. every time i go to practice and get warm it goes away and i train.. but then when i cool back off it hurts 2x as bad.. at work it makes it tough to sit.. and driving hurts like a mother...

well i sprained my knee but that was from another activity but everyonce in awhile my knee will bother me since it also affects my flexibility and smoothness on my shots with that leg...but i've learned to work with it while i continue to do therapy with it.....

but recently i did strain my right pectoral muscle about a month ago which happened the week right before the NAGA down here in south florida on june 10th... it's better now..but i havnt been rollin too hard with it..i've been mostly working on my boxing/kickboxing and doing some sparring in that part aswell.

just keep work on technique and stuff for now..you'll be fine

Ahhh I did the same thing with my thumb only I wasn't training, did you break your Scaphoid bone? Because it took mine 6 weeks to heal also.

About the worst injury i've gotten while rolling was during no-gi, I stood up to pass this guys guard and I slipped on the sweat. He was bringing his foot straight up and my jaw was going straight down and they connected, I'm just glad I didnt bite my tounge off because I did'nt have a mouthpeice on. I got a sprained TMJ from that, it only hurt for a couple days though

hey how bout this it was for a minute an all florida post..haha...sorry found some humor in it

I just got cauliflower ear...almost a year ago already.

I went to get it drained 4 times and it kept coming back. Now my ear is hard as a rock and stupid looking. Most people dont notice unless they really look at my ear though..ehhh Im only 17...sucks

About 2 weeks ago I had some fluid in my knee, so i just wore a kneepad and it drained itself.

Ive passes out from chokes 3 times...

Nothing serious though thank god

yea it's funny times when you dont where a mouthpiece are the times when you get hit hard on the chin.... i took a knee to the chin one time rolling and chipped my touth....after that i made sure about have a mouthpiece...but lately sometimes i tend not to wear it and that's when the inside of your lips or whatever get all scratched up from your teeth also...oh wells...:icon_conf

I rolled my knee cap facing a guy who had about 100lbs on me. :(

I don't know if it was the Scaphoid bone, the doctor didn't really say. He just showed me the x-ray picture and pointed out the fracture. My thumb is purple and blue at the joint and I can't bend it pretty much at all. I'm not going to neglect my training though. I can still do cardio stuff, and some bodyweight exercises, but I can't wrap my hand around a weight yet, so I cant weight train, which sucks. I'll be able to practice techniques still, as long as they don't require me to be able to have a strong grip with my left hand.

That sounds like that was pretty brutal with the foot to the jaw. I haven't injured my jaw ever, thank god.

I hope I don't get cauliflower ear, or at least I hope I can get it drained quickly once I do get it.

By the way, I keep hearing about fluid in the knee. How does that happen?

I hate getting mat burn on my toes/feet, but yeah, jamming the toes is pretty weak. I also rolled my ankle replacing guard from side control. I hate that.

I've had a ton of injuries from jiu jitsu. So far, I've fractured my foot twice, cracked my ribs twice, hyperextended my elbow multiple times...

The worst happened about a week ago, when we were practicing takedowns. My partner screwed up big time (incidently, it was my last class at that particular club) and I fell, twisting, on my knee three times in a row. I'm still having horrid knee problems but nobody is capable of telling me whats wrong with it.

The worst grappling injury I ever had was actually from wrestling. I tore the cartlidge between my ribs trying to fight a wrestler's gillotine (aka 'the twister' in BJJ). I wrestled in States the next week with it injured but it took a few months to really heal. My ribs have really never been the same since.

I also have been having problems with my left shoulder ever since I got back into BJJ a month or so ago. I've always had shoulder problems from muscular imbalances and I think it has something to do with the rotator cuff. Oh well. I guess I finally have a reason to make myself go on one of the shoulder saver programs that have been on t-nation lately.

oh man the burns drive me crazy. i have them on my arms aswell, but not as bad. everytime i fight for side control i get some nasty ones on the side of my foot. almost makes me let them get guard.

like gsoares said, everytime you stop rolling you walk away with something. when you do full mma, its even worse. but i've grown used to it, it almost doesnt feel normal if i wake up with no pain.

i hear you guys on the toe jamming and mat burns!!!..... i got some on my right now on my right elbow from sparring MMA and some on my knees.... plus i think i jammed my right big toe again not sure when but i'm thinking it was when i kicked one of my partners..lol...and some how my right thumb went numb too that was a weird one...but oh wells i just have too much fun doing this stuff...all part of the game hommies

Stretched numerous ligaments, torn ligaments, broken bones, fractured ribs, sternum, displaced back/neck, pinched nerves, god I've honestly lost track. Right now I'm dealing with patellafemoral pain and that just never goes away.... I get injury after injury that takes months to go away... sigh....
