Just for some fun........

I realized today at our noon class that training in a Gi is much more realistic than training No-Gi, in particular for "tha street". Why? Well, it was the first time I've trained No-Gi in about 6 months. And I had a guy in side mount. He made a hard shrimp out, and I accidentally grabbed the belt line of his shorts to hold him in. Ooops. Cant grab clothes in No-Gi. Also made the same error from inside his guard. I postured, and grabbed his belt line as he went for a bit of a sloppy triangle. Cant grab his shorts.

In tha skreet, you can grab clothes, there aren't too many naked guys fighting. In No-Gi, you cant grab shorts or shirt. In a real fight, you can grab clothing.

Gi is more realistic than No-Gi. And adding strikes makes it even more real.

So, the most real way to train is in a Gi...with small gloves to allow strikes. No-Gi where you cant even grab the shorts or shirts is so unrealistic.

Discuss (getting my popcorn...)

No gi grips work no matter what he is wearing.

Gi sleeve grips require sleeves. I'm looking out my window and nobody has long sleeves today.

Gi collar grips presume shirts that don't tear or come off. I've had someone grab my shirt in a drunken tussle. He came away with a handful of torn shirt fabric while I just continued on with my no-gi grips.

There's tons of tough, cholo type guys out there who all take their shirts off to fight. Goodluck with your grips there, bro.

In No-Gi, you cant grab shorts or shirt. In a real fight, you can grab clothing.

You'd really rely on clothing (a crutch/training wheel) to win you a fight? Newslfash again bro, clothes aren't as thick and durable as gi's. They rip. Then what?

Gi is more realistic than No-Gi.

Disagree. In gi the pace is much slower and you have the added luxury/training wheel/crutch of not having to worry about sweat and slipperyness. Thus, your technique can be sloppier and you can still pull it off, whereas in no gi you have to be very technical and have much control before executing a technique properly. No gi is also much faster paced, more realistic to the speed of a fight.

Once you begin to start training by relying on variables and external factors, you're already training unrealistically. The best mentality to train with is worst case scenarios.

Not to mention, grip fighting is a vital component of gi grappling. If someone grabs your shirt in a fight . . . Good; let 'em.

If you watch both gi and nogi sports jiujitsu, it's painfully obvious which one contains more pure sport moves.

1. Have fun meeting cholo guys that take off their clothes in the middle of winter where everyone is wearing a jacket. I think I'd like to use grips.

2. Thick winter jackets can mimic Gis. But no one should HAVE to rely on a piece of clothing to win a fight, that is just stupid. The Gi gives you more opinions though.

3. I agree with your point about no-gi being faster paced, but disagree with your point about technique in the gi. If anything, I feel Gi is more technical because you can't simply rely on explosiveness and sweat to slither out of submissions, as you can do in no gi.

This topic comes up many times on sherdog.

Gi: More realistic if you are training somewhere that has cold weather and would often require jackets.(Russia, Northern Europe)

No-gi: Warm climate where no one is wearing a shirt.

But seriously, why can't this debate be over and everyone trains both?

Well, we've played around with chokes using a t-shirt. If you grab it without crumbling up some extra clothe, yeah, it may rip. But, we found its very easy to grab, then just use your fingers to suck up extra clothe, and the shirt collar turns into a rope like thickness, and the gi-chokes work pretty well.

The ability to grab the belt line and pants/shorts is a very big advantage in control a guy on the ground though. It also helps passing open guard when you can grab pants.

As for those "cholo" idiots who take their shirts off......most are very fat, out of shape and untrained. A gi or no-gi grappler likely wins that fight with ease!!

That's true, because grabbing clothing opens up so many more options.

And in tha skreet, most people are wearing at a minimum shorts that can be grabbed. And probably some sort of shirt.

If I cant grab a guys pants to help control his hips, that's a big disadvantage.

Only if you're a gi guy who relies on the gi. Then yes.

But for us no gi guys, like was mentioned earlier, any grip will work on anyone no matter what they wear. :icon_chee

lol I wouldn't underestimate them that much. Some are very tough and experienced in fighting. They may have some good fighting instincts, I'd hate to find out either way.

I suppose if they're that fat and flubbery, you could always grab ahold of some flab and grip that to your advantage.

When you change to No Gi it's just a matter of changing the grips. They aren't even the most important things anyway. Some people don't seem to get that. Also I argue that it's better for technique and overall take down defense. People can do much more so it forces you to be more conscious of what you are doing. Also people have more leverage over you in a gi.

Will it? So if a guy trains no-gi, then any grip he uses will always work to control the hips in side mount, all the time? What if you face that 1 guy who is just too strong and explosive for your control to hold his hips......but then they say you can grab his pants. Think it would help?

Or reverse it. You're on the bottom in tha skreet. And your no-gi escape always works. But now this guy on top is disobeying the no-gi rules, and hes grabbing your pants and belt line?

HAHAHA!!! Gotta credit you on that one, made me laugh. How gross...imagine using a guy's neck fat as grips to choke him!!?

Yea I hate that myself. Gi gives you a bit more opinions in my opinion, but why can't people just do no-gi and gi, and find the best of both worlds?

And "no-gi guys" and "MMA grapplers" aren't opinionated?

i trained no-gi for like 3 months before gi. i enjoy both and believe that both help different facets of my game in different ways.

just train
