Hello all,

Im beginning training bjj/mt next week; I did my fair share of research on here but still looking for opinions. I'm from NJ and the gym is located there as well.

-$150/month with one year contract
-training bjj/mt 2x a week, (2-3 hours each night)
-three instructors: one has worked previously with a UFC fighter, two are black belts. all three have very credible accomplishments.

My friend trains here and has nothing but high marks for it as well as the instruction. I went to visit once to talk with them and I was very much welcomed as well. I begin the trial next week.

Feedback? Money doesn't matter too much to me, but I do feel $150 is high esp with a contract, but I also understand the tri-state market I am located in.

It's all up to you, but honestly being a well known trainer doesn't mean shit. My coach is actually starting to become more and more well known as a boxing trainer in quebec and I think within two years we will be the top gym around montreal. The thing is, I pay 58$ a month and if you do more months you progressively get better deals. I can train 6 days a week ranging from anywhere 2-3 hours a night. My trainer also takes time out of his schedule to train us privately if we have fights coming up and doesn't charge anything.

You have to find the right environment for you, I was lucky and I love the gym and the people I train with because I feel like I matter. The difference between my gym and others is that we are not treated like just another subscription, if your serious about training everything will go great.

In your case I would try and get a free class before making a commitment for a year, because some gyms even bigger ones only tend to focus and give time to people who are more advanced and they believe could look good for them, and will not give other people the time of day.

Anyways good luck.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I actually get a free month to try it out first before any commitment which is the great thing about it. Its definetly not just another subscription type place...progress is a huge focus.

What are your goals?
I.E Are you trying to become a pro fighter? Just working out? Trying to compete in grappling? etc?

My goals are to learn self defense mainly. As a recent college grad of criminal justice I see this as excellent yet useful training for me for now/near future/future. But in addition to that,I did have an interest in learning it anyway and the fact its a great workout too.
