Ive been watching Tracey Goodell and she is a grappler. But she went from blue to brown very quickly.

    Is this deserving?

    My opinion

just because she was winning all those tournaments does not mean u get promoted. maybe dominate for 2 two years in a row. if you look at the internview she won 1 tournments as white belt and was promoted to bliue right away. Me i won my first 4 tournaments as white and still had to wait a long time before i got promoted to blue.

BJJ is about payiung your dues. Look at Kron, he was for sure a black but was held back and paid his dues than got to black

    thats my opinion anyways

Awesome competitor, but as I stated in another thread, does she have the knowledge of a wide variety of techniques from a wide array of positions? And is her knowledge well enough for her to explain these techniques in great detail. There's no doubting she has the competition aspect of it down.

Edit: It's not to say I think she is not a brown belt level, I don't know where she stands but I trust LI's assessment.

If your instructor is reputable and gives you a belt, you are that belt. No question. Regardless of time spent at each belt.

Also, what the hell is "paying dues" in BJJ? Do you mean paying for you gym membership or something?

Not only has this been debated to death in a number of threads exactly like yours, but you managed to turn the post into talking about yourself (of course leaving out the fact that your accomplishments pale in comparison to hers). Short answer and hopefully the end of the thread: She clearly works hard and is talented, evidenced by her performance on the mats and numerous titles. She is a legitimate brown belt and your thoughts on the matter are irrelevant.

it is funny in judo people bitch about it being the other way around

it still works in judo. People know who the great guys are from their wins and people know who the great instructors are, I have seen national team members take pointers from a guy who started judo in his twenties and competed as a blackbelt ONCE (only one match and he lost)

If you are able to win constantly at one level you should be promoted, maybe have a little more precaution when it comes to blackbelt promotion.

Even a bluebelt should be able to teach the most basic stuff and perhaps have a few techniques as a speciality

Some people are great competitors, some are great teachers, some are both

You don't need competitive ability of your own to teach, there is some truth to the old "those who can't do teach".

some tournaments require you to move up to the next level if you win your division, this is from naga website (Please note, if you placed 1st in a prior NAGA event you MUST move up a skill level!)

As far as I know Lloyd Irvin promotes people based on skill and performance. This girl went from blue to brown by winning major tournaments at blue and then purple. What belt would you give her?

LI produced Hall, Fowlet, JT, Vera and I'm sure I'm missing some. So if he wants to give someone a belt id agree with him because I haven't seen him giving any spencer pratts brown belts.

Coming onto an internet forum and complaining about someone else getting a belt promotion is a sucker move.

Very few people do anything amazing at blackbelt. It doesn't mean your not a quality blackbelt.

Here is the main old thread about this for the OP: http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f12/blue-brown-30-days-1253273/

Here were her accomplishments for 2010 prior to getting her brown belt:

*blue belt gold at this years brasilieros
*double blue belt gold at this years New York open
*double blue belt gold at this years pan ams
*double purple belt gold at the mundials

The concept of 'paying dues' is a retarded notion that sadly exists in BJJ and fortunately doesn't in judo, sambo, wrestling or nogi.
