hello all,

I just started going to bjj about 3 months ago and want to get into tournaments but my instructor tells me that if you don't come from a Brazilian school you prob wont win unless you submit everyone, and its not the first time ive heard this either so im thinking this is true...Any thoughts on this?

thanks

What exactly do you mean by a brazilian school? Do you mean a school in Brazil or school in America with a Brazilian as lead instructor.

BTW no matter which type of school you're talking about thats BS.

But you've only been training 3 months so you may or may not win regardless of where you train. You haven't had a chance to build your game yet. The advice given to me is don't wait; do tourneys early and often. You develop your skills, test the waters and see how you like the atmosphere.

thank you for giving me a helpful answer... i meant a school led by a brazilian instructor...

I dont think that is true unless maybe its an inhouse tourney. But then again the bjj tourneys with refs from brazil who dont speak very good english, well, then it is helpful to have your teacher able to argue in portugues, understand whats being said, etc. NAGA is quite fair. The refs are of a high quality

Brazilian BJJ players need 5 coaches. 1 to coach the player, and 4 to argue with the ref.

JK!

lol sounds about right, best is when your brazilian coach goes off on a ref and he doesn't understand him cursing up a storm at him

thats total bull! Just train hard and you will do ok. Dont go in thinking your gonna kill everyone with 3 months of training but I recommend for you to compete because its good experience!

with three months of training, you will likely get smoked. i dont mean to be a dick, but ive been training about 5 months and the upper level white belts are still light-years ahead of me - not that you can't be progressing faster, i just hope you are prepared

that being said, any tournament experience will go a long way in making you more comforatble and so on - ive only had one and got destroyed, but i know i will be better prepared and more comfortable next time

theres a difference between what you learn in your gym and sport bjj. in the tournys ive been in you win by sub or points, points favor wrestlers who can keep or hold position. some people wont go for subs because they dont want to get caught and risk losing position or being subed. I have had a blast in every tourny ive been in and I say its only money go for it.

no dude thats not true. my first no gi tournament i came in first place won all my matches. everyone is different some people have good technique or natural ability it has nothing to do whither or not your instructor is Brazilian or not.

My first tournament I went 7-1. first in gi and second in no gi. Lost to a wrestler who never attempted a single submission the whole 5 minutes.

I have been training about 2 months and will go to my first tourney in September. The Best of the Best in Omaha, Ne.

Just do it. Don't worry about the ethnicity of your instructor. If you're good, you're good.
