Media Topuria walked around at 80kg/180lbs as a FW (From new JRE just dropped)

No, it's not crazy at all.

The UFC already does random drug testing, right? Just have them bring a scale during those tests. If a fighter weighs more than a certain percentage over their weight class, they’re required to move up.

It’s a simple way to push fighters to compete closer to their natural weight, instead of having them lose massive amounts of weight just to fight smaller opponents.
But it doesn’t do any of that because what you weigh between camps is totally irrelevant.

I mean look at Paddy Pimblett. You’re really gonna say because he’s eating like a pig that he has to move up?

The whole issue is what they weigh on fight night vs the cut. Why not just do same day fight weights and not allow them to cut more than a percentage? It cuts out a ton of crap and pointless restriction. As a former athlete, I’m going to enjoy my offseason and not spend it glued to a scale.

If you’re packing a ton of weight in the off-season, you’re not in the right weight class. The weight you maintain year round, not just what you can cut to, is the weight you should be fighting at. Fluctuating 20+ pounds all the time is straight up unhealthy.

Same day weigh-ins would never work in MMA. They drastically increase the risk of medical issues, since fighters have far less time to rehydrate after cutting weight. This leads to lower performance, greater health risks and a much higher chance of fighters missing weight or pulling out of fights altogether.

Yeah sure. Maybe he should stop being a fat ass.

This is a 5'7 180lb bodybuilder 5 weeks out before his cut. It's kinda crazy to think Topuria is anything other than undisciplined to walk around 180lbs when he's 5'7.

In all seriousness, I was thinking about how he is the ultimate maximized alpha manlet. I don't like using that condescending term honestly, because I'm a former short guy that grew to 6'1" (short for Sherdog standards I know) very late compared to most people, so I feel the pain, having been 4'11" in my freshman year of high school.

But anyway Topuria is rich, confident, good looking, has a lot of style, hot wife, and can beat up the vast majority of other men on the planet, even at his size. I could see him as a hero to the short community because he was able to overcome that and reach such a high status in several different aspects of life.

Hahahaha wtf?

Do we really believe he gets up to 180 for a walk around weight? He could just lie for the shit of it or maybe he once got to 180 when he spent 2 weeks at an all-inclusive resort and ate/drank his face off.

He's certainly very well built but not like Sean Sherk or anything so I figured 170-175 would be the top limit of "in-shape but not fight shape" for him.
Tell me one reason why he needs to lie about weight? Just one reason

I am 75 kg 170cm around 14-15 % body fat ilia is 172 cm around 13-14% body fat and he was waay bigger than me when we stand next to each other he will be easly 80-83 kg easly

Well he's moving up in weight so to justify the move and also make the other guys more fearful, I could see how he possibly would exaggerate his weight. Besides that, people (especially men) lie all the time to try to impress other people on topics like how strong they are, how many women they've slept with, how much they make or how much horsepower their car has so it's just human nature for some.

Even still, it's only 5 or so lbs that I would think he'd be exaggerating and we all know guys can definitely blow up in weight when they stop training as hard and starting eating more "junk" food.

I'd argue that Ilia is more like 10% bodyfat when he gets in the cage but outside of camp I could see 13-14% being realistic.

Yeah, the math isn't mathing with Ilia being naturally 180 lbs.

He's leanly muscled but he doesn't have a big frame for his height.

He's probably 180 maybe after a week long post fight all you can eat vacation.

The confusion lies in how we perceive this. He said he walks around at 180lb, he did not say he was 180lb on the podcast. Hes obviously actively training right now as he is an active LW fighter. Must be a chubby kid off training. His frame is way too small to be this lean at 180.

He's absolutely huge, he will be one of the biggest LWs too when he pulls up, looking like Palhares. He looked huge in there with Jai Herbert, shorter yes but incredibly thick and muscled and big framed. He's much much much larger than other FWs that have moved up like Poirier and Hooker and Oliveira.

Chandler is also thick and muscled and big framed.

Being sarcastic bro, he even came up from 145 earlier in his career and I'm supposed to believe he's this huge FW just because of his weight in the cage. I'm not one of those people that buys into the "weight always equals size" philosophy.

Well, it kinda is the way it works.

I think more in terms of frame size, because nowadays everyone cuts a lot of weight. For example Till was a much bigger WW to me than Woodley, even though Woodley was more muscled and probably weighed close to the same. Poatan is a bigger MW than Hector Lombard, etc.

But I'm not just taking about height, I mean overall frame. I don't think George Roop is bigger than Palhares....

Funny how nobody called him a weight bully at 145 🤔
It's weird. It didn't seem like he was big for the weight class. I'd have to watch his fight with Volk again but he looked similar in build to Alex. I'm surprised he wants to move up to LW. I think FW is the better weight class for him. Can you imagine Ilia fighting Paddy? Paddy will be like Andre the Giant in there compared to Toppy.

Some of yall all acting like hes a giant lol. Dude is 5'7".

Also funny given how often the term is thrown around here, he's apparently living 40lbs over his weight class, but barely anyone calls him a weight bully.

Yeah, I get it. How much your bone structure fills up a door frame essentially.

Bone density <goldie>

Topuria was officially 167 lbs on fight night vs Volk, recorded by the athletic commission. At 167 lbs, he looked in great shape. It’s conceivable that he could be close to 180 while still being in good shape. I too think he looks too tiny to be 180 lbs while being I good shape, but was surprised he was 167 vs Volk while being in great shape, no fat on him at 167
