"As soon as [Max] starts to really fight me and start exchanging blows, that's the end of the fight. Nobody can exchange blows with me, not only because of my power but because of the technique I apply to each movement...

So as soon as [Max] starts to fight, as soon as he points his finger down, if he does it from the beginning... that's it." - Topuria

I agree. As good as Max is, he doesn't perform as well against shorter guys. Volk was able to outstrike him for almost every round of their fights, except for the first 2 before the fight where USADA woke him up in the middle of the night. Aldo before gassing also had success boxing with him, IIRC he caught him with a left hook that hurt him in the first fight.

Now not only is he going up against a physically smaller fighter, but he also has probably the best boxing in the division, legit KO power and is half a decade younger than him. If he struggled at times with Aldo and struggled with Volk, I don't see a way he doesn't struggle with Ilia. Wouldn't at all be surprised if this is the fight where Holloway's chin finally betrays him.

He definitely needs to stay on the outside and not open himself up too much. Try to ride out a decision victory by peppering him with shots. Stay out range and coast. Make Topuria commit to him. Evade his power shots.

Topuria will have his openers to KO Max, he will have to try to see the combos before they develop and be ready for them and evade them.

For a short guy, Volk always tended to fight very well long and not so great in close. He was sorta an odd guy. A lot of jabs, a lot of low kicks and lead leg activity, liked to set up the straight. Plenty of bouncing in and out of range and circling away. Volk never really had the punch selection, clinch striking or combinations to be a great inside fighter...despite being about 5'5. He also lacked the power and didn't have a strong chin. He was an outside fighter and movement based, fought well long. Not a good exchange of Max struggling with short guys.

On the inside, Topuria throws some of the cleanest combinations in MMA. He's finishing guy with 4 and 5 punch combinations on several occasions, uppercuts, hooks, high and low to the body. He also has the wrestling, athleticism and physicality to back it up. He's been dropped twice by head kicks vs longer fighters in his career though and on the outside Max has quicker footwork and higher volume. It's really just a matter of who can get the fight where they want and how. With some curveball being can Max's chin handle Topurias power? Can Topurias cardio handle Maxs pace? And what element could Topurias takedowns play on Max?

I feel like its a fight were the worst thing he could do is show Max too much respect, back off and allow him to pressure him.

Whether he actually finishes or not I think making Max full his power early is the best tactic.
Great way of putting it.

If max incorporates some leg kicks it could be a problem. turdporia didn't punish or check a single one from Emmett. why he didn't do that more and chose to load up on his shots instead I'll never understand.

Max is not that guy. He is long and technical. What a fight.
