I agree with that. I know someone who works in a convenience store and she says she's seeing tons of people she never sees in that store mostly buying scratch off lottery tickets and beer. She says the store is as busy as it ever was but its mostly people thinking they're going somewhere "safe" and out of the way to buy nonsense because they're bored.
I'm in the middle on this one. I'm OK with having some hope and looking to the future. This doom and gloom environment is not good for our country. But at the same time, it bothers me that people are ignoring advice for the present.
That's interesting, actually. Never thought of it. And weird. A weird trait to come out during this on the scratch-offs.
Off-topic, but I bet she can confirm this---I worked at a gas station evenings/nights one summer after I'd get off from my paving job. Livin' the dream, right? It wasn't that bad, actually.
Anyway, there were the same 4 or 5 guys who would come around on Friday evenings (payday in those days---this is 25-30 years back) and buy 100 of those $1 scratch-off lottery tickets. There were only a few different options back then, not 800 different ones like now. When I was pulling them out and folding/counting them, they'd say "make it 150" or "what number is it on? what number is that one on? what about the cash explosion? make it 200 total, 50 from each", whatever. Always asking what number the roll was on. They had a system.
*rolls eyes*
They would bring back their free ticket, $1, $2, $5 and $10 winners (and once in a while a $50 winner) and get more. Rinse and repeat. $100, $150, $200 gone within an hour. Scratching them off right there on the hood of some beater car or truck. Then leaving with their quart or two of beer and a couple packs of cigarettes once all the money was gone. I used to think it was sad and wonder if they had a family at home and a wife who was hoping they didn't stop on the way home this Friday for lottery tickets. Again.
And circa 1990/1991, $150 or $200 out of a weeks pay for a laborer was a significant portion. Very significant.
Back OT in our coronavirus thread, two weeks working from home has me hoping it's not four more, I can tell you that.
I will go back to the office as soon as they will let me at this point. It's right down the road, but they sent something out to the effect of avoid the office if it all possible notes early this week. I went in a week ago this past Tuesday because I wanted a couple things from my office here for "the magic factory" I set up on the dining room table, but fuck all. I'll be Nicholson in The Shining in a month...
