Tom Cruise is getting ready to head back to the Danger Zone — and he’s bringing an old friend along for the ride.

Sources tell Variety that Joseph Kosinski — who directed Cruise in Oblivion — is the front-runner to direct Top Gun 2 for Paramount and Skydance Pictures. While no official offer has been made, several insiders believe one is imminent.

Cruise met with potential helmers prior to and while filming Mission Impossible: 6 in London to ensure the Top Gun sequel was ready to go after production wrapped. Even with Cruise and Kosinski having previously worked together on the 2013 sci-fi action film, sources say it was Kosinski’s vision the sequel’s direction that officially won him the job.

Oblivion was a huge hit for Cruise and Kosinski bringing in $286 million worldwide and only seemed like a matter of time before the two worked again.

Cruise recently confirmed to a British talk show that the sequel was moving forward and would hopefully shoot at the start of next year.

“Its happening,” the 54-year-old actor added. “You’re the first people I’ve told. It’s going to happen.”

The thought of making a follow-up to the 1986 pic that made him a bonafide star has been on Cruise’s agenda for some time. The project has gained momentum in recent years, especially after Jungle Book scribe Justin Marks was tapped to pen latest draft.

This latest project will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and explore the end of an era of dogfighting which made the original film so exhilarating. Other plot details are vague but Val Kilmer has gone on record that he was asked to come back to reprise the role of Iceman opposite Cruise’s Maverick.

Kosinski’s recently wrapped the firefighter action pic Granite Mountain starring Miles Teller and Josh Brolin with Sony releasing this fall.

Tom Cruise Confirms He'll Star in TOP GUN 2, Possibly Shooting in 2018

Tom Cruise paid a visit to the Australian morning show Sunrise where he confirmed a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun (via Yahoo). When the host said, “Top Gun 2, please say it’s true,” he responded, “It’s true. I’m going to start filming it, probably in the next year.” Cruise is currently doing a press tour for his upcoming film for Universal Pictures, The Mummy.

A follow-up to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously outlined that the film will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming a thing of the past.

Top Gun celebrated its 30th anniversary last year and it was one of the films that made Tom Cruise a household name.

Back in 2016, producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of himself and Cruise with the caption, “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”

Producer Reveals TOP GUN 2 Will Be Tom Cruise Vs. Drones

It has been 28 years since Top Gun first took to the skies, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer reveals that a sequel is close to becoming a reality. The producer told The Huffington Post that a follow up to the Tom Cruise blockbuster, which was set at the Navy's elite fighter weapon school in San Diego during the Cold War, will reflect today's changing world of warfare. The original film's director, Tony Scott, died in 2012, and Top Gun 2 was one of three films on his plate before he passed away from an apparent suicide.

"We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer," Bruckheimer revealed in the interview. "Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it."

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," explained the producer. "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture," he explained, adding that there is no director yet for the sequel.

Fuckin Top Gun 2? Inspiration is at an all-time low....

I suggested a Big Trouble in Little China sequel.
We get to see an older Jack Burton, role reprised by Kurt Russell, learn what he's been up to the last 30 years and go on one last adventure.

Its a no brainer imo.
Its not a reboot, its a fun as hell idea, and nobody gets hurt.

TOP GUN Sequel Will Feature Maverick and Drone Warfare

Do you feel the need? The need for a Top Gun sequel? Rumors of Top Gun 2 have swirled since the original touched down in 1986. Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed that the project is in development and revealed its plot details at a Terminator Genisys press junket in Berlin, Collider reports.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today." He added, "It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters... It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."

Fans of the original film will be delighted to know that Ellison hinted that Tom Cruise will reprise his role. "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison said.

'Top Gun' Sequel Will Explore Drone Warfare and the End of the Fighter Pilot Era

As some of you probably know, a Top Gun sequel has been in the works for a long time. Unfortunately, the death of Tony Scott derailed those plans but it looks like the gears are turning once again.

Personally, I'm not totally sure what to think of the story idea: Modern day. Drones. The end of the dogfighting era. Sounds kind of depressing. I think I might actually prefer something more retro.

But in any case, I am always down for more Maverick.

Now bring it on, c'mon!

If you’re feeling the need for some speed, then you’re in luck: During the Berlin press day for Terminator Genisys last week, Skydance Productions’ David Ellison and Dana Goldberg provided some intel on the status of the sequel to the 1986 fighter-ace blockbuster Top Gun. Among the tidbits: That Top Gun 2 would take place in modern day; that it would involve Maverick, the hotshot, hot-dogging Navy pilot character that helped make Tom Cruise one of the biggest stars in the world; and that it would revolve around the increased use of unmanned drones in military aviation.

“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,” said Ellison (via Collider). “He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”

“I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically,” Ellison went on. “When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out…. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology…. So it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots, and what that culture is today.”

This isn’t the first sequel to almost get airbourne: Back in 2010, original Top Gun director Tony Scott was working on a follow-up that also would’ve involved the return of Maverick and, potentially, Cruise. (Scott passed away in 2012.) There’s no word yet on whether Cruise will sign up for this new attempt. So for now, we’ll just have to hold on to that lovin’ feeling a little bit longer.

they should release it on gay pride parade day

wtf.. top gun drones? that doesn't even make fucking sense

Watch the whole movie just be an extension of the beach volleyball scene.

No way does this movie live up to the amazingness of the original.

Drones are bullshit. The real Top Gun school still exists to this day, and STILL teaches dogfighting. So what the fuck is this bullshit?!

One aspect that made the original so amazing was the use of actual fighter jets. How much do you want to bet CGI jets/drones are used in this one?

How much do you want to bet that this movie looks/feels/sounds NOTHING like the original? Therefore it is a sequel in name only.
