Your top 10 or top 20 films this decade.

Coming off of that Paul Thomas Anderson/best working director thread I mentioned that perhaps listening favoured recent films might be rather more revealing? Seems like a potentially interesting subject in itself as your arguably going more from personal taste and less from status that builds up over time.

I'm going to take the gutless option and not do my own list first as I think that tends to bias things towards discussion of it although I spose if the thread dies on its ass I'll end up making the first reply.

If you really want to make it best 10/20 films of the last 10 years rather than from 2010 onwards although I think that's likely to be rather more predictable with stuff like The Dark Knight.

Is there some typo I'm not seeing? basically your top 10 or top 20 favourite films this decade.

Makes this your OP. Not that rambling mess you have up there.

Seemed that Paul Thomas Anderson thread had most of the people regulally posting about cinema on this forum involved to me and that's where it came up.

Added in a simple explanation before that.

In an effort to save the thread I'll go with a somewhat rushed and unordered top 20 of....

Mad Max: Fury Road
Black Swan
The Lobster
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
The Hateful Eight
Under The Skin
Logan
Cavalry
True Grit
13 Assasins
Blue is The Warmest Colour
Drive
Ex Machina
Inside Lywin Davis
The Handmaiden
The Master
Her
Dogtooth
Nightcrawler
Two Days, One Night

I dunno. Here's ten I like from that time period.

Birdman
Whiplash
The Revenant
Sicario
Sing Street
Edge of Tomorrow
Creed
Hell or High Water
True Grit
Inception

Good to see another True Grit fan, it did pretty well at the box office at the time but I honestly though it would become more of a favourite than it has.

I'm guessing Inarritu would likely be the biggest love/hate choice for many although personally a bit in the middle for me along with Carax's Holy Motors, enjoyed both but they just seemed a little too try hard to me.

The True Grit remake is one of the best films I've seen period. I don't think I've seen a remake elevate everything across the board so substantially from the original. The only thing that is close is the performances from Robert Duvall and Barry Pepper.

What?

Here's my list:

Incendies
Goltzius and the Pelican Company
The Hunt
The Master
Inside Llewyn Davis
Only Lovers Left Alive
Snowpiercer
The Wolf of Wall Street
The Winter Soldier
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Inherent Vice
Nightcrawler
The Blackcoat's Daughter
Sicario
The Witch
The Handmaiden
Blade Runner 2049
Logan
Phantom Thread
Twin Peaks

Yeah. It's quite similar to the original. But every moment is just elevated on some cinematic front. It's really is a polishing.

I didn't know you liked that one so much. Did you post about it in the SMD?

I think I just posted that I thought it was one of the best movies I've ever seen but didn't offer up any explanation as to why. I was going to but, you know, time flies and you get lost in other things. I guess it was a difficult film to write about too. It's always hard to articulate onself well-enough when you're trying to explain why something is among the best things you've ever seen.

For sure. I liked it a lot, but it was rather an intense watch. I think I need more viewings to come to grips with it. The first watch was just taking everything in.

That one character that kept changing sides really annoyed me though. I wish I could edit him out.

Yeah a nice reminder on the Handmaiden, knocked Rogue One off for that.

I'm still not really sure how I feel about Inherent Vice, as I said in the other thread its hard to watch that kind of film without expectations from The Big Lewbowski plus I spose the plot itself can act as a bit of a distraction in its complexity.

I haven't seen many films this last decade tbh. There's only two that I really rated as top shelf

1. Drive
2. Black Swan
