I'm a pretty flexible guy. I can do splits both ways, pull effective rubber guard, etc. But I wouldn't put my flexibility up there with the likes of BJ Penn or Eddie Bravo (he's almost gross). But I was thinking about working towards that. I was wondering if that would hamper my power or explosiveness or anything like that when kicking though. I am primarily a standup fighter, and will always keep it on the feet if I can help it, but I figure why not be as flexible as I can be for the ground game just in case you know? One of my old instructors told me that being too flexible can hurt explosiveness and power. Is this true?

flexibility can help your standup game as well. you will be able to kick/knee to the head easier and faster. it will also help on lower kicks as well b/c stretching makes you stronger. (i was taught that if you practice kicking high when you kick lower it will be much faster and stronger.)

I vaguely recall that argument back in the 80s. Flexibility and power/explosiveness are not mutually exclusive Especially for the simple act of a head kick.

Cro Crop is an example.

As long as you stretch warm you should be fine. You really need to know your body though.

I stretched cold for years (as a kid) and had to have knee surgery to keep my knee from popping out of its socket at the age of 12. Now as an adult my ligaments are over stretched so I am more prone to injury.

Its great that you are flexible. Striking especially kickboxing needs flexible kicks so you can do advance kicks easier and you can use your hips more

BJ Penn, Cro Cop...

Do you really need more of an answer?

You can read up on the temporary effects of static stretching and why you might not want to do them right before fighting explosively, but other than that...

I was thinking about it. I think the concept of losing strength because of flexibility got off base from either research or professional strength guys. The understanding is that is you really stretched before super heavy sets that you would lose power. Not applicable to your concern.

flexibility will make you more faster and have better leg kicks and balance.
