I've seen too many posts implying that KZ is just another UFC hype job. I understand. You're new to the sport. Ronda, McGregor, Sage, CM Punk are your stars.

Back in 2010, 7 years ago, KZ made his American debut on the undercard of a WEC event. He lost a split decision but in doing so, also generated an overnight cult following for his performance.

As evidenced, his T-Shirt line launched later that year and instantly became and continued to be one of, if not, the highest selling t-shirts in MMA.

This guy was 0-2 and didn't speak English but was still more popular than most of the top 10 in his division.

Of course he began his title run in the UFC, culminating in a title shot against Aldo where he tried to reattach his shoulder midfight, further establishing his Zombie name.

I said it in a post before, the Korean Zombie had a cult following that the UFC latched onto, not the other way around. That's rare these days.

Here's an old article talking about the Zombie t-shirt craze back then.

Most of his fans are white too. A bunch of white kids holding the Korean flag at the Houston fight lol.

Can't speak English - loved by all.

Tyron? Where you at. Are they klan members too?

Still have the original t-shirt... my favorite mma shirt (I only have 2. The other one is a Korean Zombie shirt I bought at his gym in Korea - new design). Hoping for a great run for KZ post military service!

He is not Hype at all. The guy was a solid title contender at FW, had a nasty injury in the Aldo fight. I'm happy to see him back and strong.

dude my friends from SK were HUGE KZ fans. I honestly never really understood why he left in his prime but he's exciting af to watch. Don't know if he'll end up with gold some day, but his fights will be gold and that's all I ask for from UFC fighters.

Extremely overrated, Sherdog likes to hype up Korean hype jobs like Choi. Only for their hype train to crash and burn.

I have nothing against him but it looked like he was being out fought until the uppercut

You do realise he has a successful career before his hiatus.

His fight against Poirier is one of the best fights I've seen.

IMG_0189.JPG New shirt design is same as on the design in photo on the elevator doors...

Not sure if Choi's hype train crashed and burned after the loss to Cub. Took a huge step up in competition, and though used his face to block a ton of shots, dished out a few of his own and in the process...lasted the whole fight in an amazing display of heart. I know, heart ain't skill...but it's one of those x-factors that elevate a fighter's game i.e. Robbie Lawler.

he left to complete his military service. i think its compulsory in korea.

It seemed as if KZ won vs. Bemudez because of a bad positional mistake that Bermudez made, plus of course KZ capitalizing on that mistake with a perfectly-placed punch. I'm not ready yet to shout the praises of KZ because - besides that one KO punch - he didn't display a whole lot. But I'm looking forward to his next fight for sure. Maybe Cub could take on his second Korean in a row.

man, I thought athletes and stuff had a way to try and get out of that. If I remember correctly, there was a South Korean baseball player for the Indians that got out of it.

That was an elite performance against Bermudez. If elite means top 4 or 5 in the division KZ is elite.
That was called "I have no skills and keep on getting punched in the face, I will be punch drunk in 10 years but if it helps me win now then that's okay".
