Top lightweight contender T.J. Grant isn't all the way back from the concussion which derailed his title shot.

But the good news is, the Nova Scotia native has returned to the gym and he eyes on a specific date.

"I'm a lot better than I was," White told MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani on Wednesday's edition of UFC Tonight. "I'm getting closer and closer, I want to approach my return with as much care as I can."

Grant suffered a concussion while working on jiu-jitsu in training for what was planned to be a shot against then-champion Benson Henderson at UFC 164. Grant had to pull out of the bout, then his replacement, Anthony Pettis, submitted Henderson to take the title.

It was expected Grant (21-5), who won five straight fights to earn his title shot, would meet Pettis at UFC on FOX 9 in December, but Grant wasn't clear to return.

Since then, although he's not at 100 percent, Grant says he's almost there.

"I'm not training full on yet, but I've been getting on the mats and hitting pads, not having any set backs," Grant said. "I feel about 90-95 percent recovered."

Meanwhile, there's a particular date on the UFC's crowded 2014 schedule which caught Grant's attention: Oct. 4, when the company makes its debut in Grant's home province, at the Halifax Metro Centre for a UFC Fight Night card.

"I would love to fight in Halifax," Grant said. "But as soon as I'm 100 percent, I'll let UFC know and leave it up to them."

Would like to see him back sooner than that. No idea how a concussion can knock you out for that long. When he returns, a fight with Nate Diaz would be a barn burner. What do you guys think?

Waiting til October to see Grant fight again will make me a little sad. With any luck he'll beat someone up for money (and our amusement) in the meantime.

id like to see him take on diaz, I am not completely sold on him as a title contender yet

October's a while off. LW division could be completely different by then. I would still like to see him fight Benson if the timing works out right. Although, that's a rough fight to come back from a year+ layoff to

I'd love to see him back by summer time. Fights with Nate Diaz, Josh Thomson, or Cerrone if he beats Barboza.

If he's already 90-95% why would he need to wait another 8 months almost? :(

That elbow gif reminds me of this fight. Why the hell did Nick Denis have to retire? He was a super exciting Bantamweight and could've been a good draw in Canada.

that's a crazy layoff but I just want to see him fight for the title.
the lightweight division has a lot of good fighters that could easily take the belt but most people are always talking about benson, nate or gil and they've had their chance

Concussions suck the D. I hope he can come back in October

Concussions like that are serious business. Better to play it safe than sorry. Take into account that once he's fully healed, he'll have to dedicate a few months into a full training camp.

Weird, I thought he retired due to the lack of money he was making in MMA. I wonder who I'm thinking of. Sucks regardless. Dude was a straight beast.

Kole Konrad retired to take a job in marketing.
