Any tips for standing up in the guard? I am having trouble keeping good posture and keeping my ankles from being sweeped out under me.

1: Practice.
2: Keep good posture, back straight, look to the ceiling. Imagine yourself doing a squat.
3: Stagger your stance upon standing up.
4: Practice standing up without using your hands, this will force you to learn proper posture, foot placement and technique.
5: Practice.

Be sure to control the rist or gi sleeve on the same side as the first leg you stand up on.

Throw your hips into him - if your hips are forward, as well as staggered like someone mentioned, he cant sweep you. You have to be explosive when you stand up and throw your hips forward.

As your standing use the first leg and pressure inside with the knee.. as if your trying to smash their ribs with your knee as you stand. keep your postire.. its the most important.

put hands on their biceps, stand up, hips forward, step back with one leg, work the pass

I don't really agree that you need to be explosive when you stand up, I just do it the way Saulo does it in his instructional. I just wanted to confirm, if the opponent hooks your lead leg when you are standing up in his guard, do you just drop your knee (leg hes hooked on) on his chest, and get your leg out?

Posture is propably the most important thing. I try to to fully stand up. Have your body at about a 45 degree angle facing upwardss, back straight, head up knees bent and solid base from your feet. Then I work my pass.

Sorry youre right I should clarify - to stand up with both legs at the same time to break guard it helps to be explosive. You can do it Saulo's way as well, of course.

yeah what he said....

The main thing would be to keep your eye level correct (looking up).......And practice breaking his guard when standing

Could someone explain what Saulo's way is?
It's not really a special way, it's just the way he taught it in his instructional. It's pretty standard.

Position your hands:
Grab his sleeve or wrist with 1 hand, other hand grab some material around the center of his belly/chest (around there) so he can't get up.

Stand up:
On the side that you are holding his sleeve/wrist move your body SIDEWAYS, not forward, to get the leg on that same side up (So he can't pull you back down while u lean forward to bring 1 leg up). After one leg is up when you bring your other leg up to stand up, do it in diagonally/angled, it makes it a lot easier to get up.

The key things he pointed out was to make sure you move your body sideways when u get the first leg up, and to stand up diagonally/angled. I hope I got it right, I recommend his instructionals a lot, its all about exerting the least energy possible.
