Adesanya is not the first interim champ to unify with the official championship. There have been plenty of times when the interim belt was needed and justified in the end.

When was an interim title not only necessary but the appropriate choice in the past? (any org)

Note: The BMF Championship of the World is not an interim belt, it’s the most prestigious belt p4p and basically tells you who the real hitters are and what would happen in the streets aka ril life.

Renan Barao is the GOAT interim champion.

It’s never been necessary.

The time Conor took the FW and LW divisions hostage..

Long before Penn was getting KO’ed by my drunk uncle he unified the LW strap against Sherk, and won. How can it never be necessary if the interim champ often successfully unifies?

Nog Interim- beat Sylvia, lost to Mir
Condit Interim- beat Diaz, lost to GSP
Ferguson Interim- beat somebody, lost to cable
Colby Interim- beat somebody, lost to inactivity
Im pretty sure there's more failed unification attempts by the Interim champ, as opposed to other way around

Brock unified his belt, beat Mir and Randy

When Francisco Santos "Frank" Mir III was in that motorcycle accident and out for 14 months it was certainly necessary for Arlovski to fight Sylvia for the interim belt.

It’s never been necessary.

This. If Dana and Co. just keep their word and give the next person in line the shot, then it's all good. Letting Dominick Cruz be out for 18 years on injury before finally deciding to strip him was nuts. Either they can defend or they can't. It's stupid seeing promotional press conferences these days where everyone from the same weight class is fighting on one card and they all have a belt on the table.

The time Conor took the FW and LW divisions hostage..

There were interim belts set up within 3-4 months in both cases, before we ever knew FW and LW were being held "hostage". The UFC actually acted fairly preemptively.

Also not his fault Cormier knew he was injured for a month and only decided to pull out last minute against Rumble, forcing the UFC to scramble to make Holloway/Pettis an interim interim fight, which would be dumb so they stripped Conor and promoted Aldo to have an interim for two perfectly healthy champs. And not Conor's fault Khabib gorged himself on tiramisu and fucked up his weight cut and ruined that interim fight and wouldn't return in time for Tony, or Tony went and tripped on cables later too.

Nog Interim- beat Sylvia, lost to Mir

Disagree hard. The biggest joke the UFC's ever pulled is have Randy defend against Brock and Nog defend against Mir in back to back PPVs.

That tournament was exciting as shit, especially with the culmination of Brock reigning supreme, but it was a complete joke that the undisputed champ was back and defending while Nog was too.

Never. If it's "necessary," then the reigning champion should be stripped and the real belt put on the line.

So we’re in agreement that the interim titles for both divisions was necessary. Which is the thread topic..

Wasnt Randy-Chuck the first time around for interim and then unified with Tito? Of was that the other way around? Or am I off my rocker and wrong in the head?

Its been said but Mir's motorcycle accident is a perfect case. You have a timeframe for coming back, and its a long one.

It’s never been necessary.

It's been necessary a few times, after Mir's motorcycle injury, and when Couture was having negotiation issues with the UFC and there's been a few others.

There shouldn't be interim belts

Champs should have exactly one year to defend or be stripped. Then the former champ can get an immediate title shot whenever they return
