Makes no sense. The guy was maybe a MW (185) - And SHogun and Wandy were both already at 205.

Ninja vs Sergei K . was ridiculous. Did they want him to die? WAs he too fat to make 185 conistently?

For much of Ninja's PRIDE run they didn't have the lower weight classes. Kinda a "UFC pre-WEC merger" situation. He took two losses after Bushido started and moved down. Oddly, the first of those was his Sergei loss, probably the worst of his career, and the second was the Rampage loss, a fight many believed Ninja won, including Rampage.

until 2006ish, pride basically only had 2 weight classes - above 205 and below 205. and with saku already fighting mirko and etc, they didn't see weight mismatches as that big of a problem. they also had an option for special rules if there was a 10kg (22 lb) difference, where the smaller fighter could opt out of the 4 point attack.

bushido was a second tier event structure for them until 2006ish (and perhaps even then), focusing on lower weights

Does it look like these bad mofos care about weight classes?

Wanderlei also said fuck it to weight classes and almost got flattened by the atomic butt drop from a 260+ pound Mark Hunt

Chutebox didn't have a heavyweight fighter so that became Ninja's role

Ya, and that was weird they had their smallest guy fight there...lol. I guess the others were already in place as far as SHogun and Wandy

No idea but that throw Sergei hit on Ninja is still one of my favourite throws of all time.

Ya, ti's awesome! Kharitonov was always one of my favorite HWs that wasn't a super known guy like Fedor, CroCop, and Nog. He had standup, power, and submission....but he DID hold Mike Russow's glove ;)

Not to mention he fought Sergei in the 1st round of the open weight Grand Prix. It wasn't technically a heavyweight fight, it was an any-weight fight.
Edit: Wait, or did he just get fat to enter the HW Grand Prix? Man it's been a long time. I might be misremembering...
Edit: Edit: Yeah ok that's right. He put on weight to enter the Heavy Weight Grand Prix, I guess Chute Boxe didn't have a legit heavy weight to put in the tourney at the time. I can't think of any Chute Boxe heavyweights in Pride now I'm thinking about it...

I always thought PRIME Sergei was something else. When he was a SLIM HW, he could've done alot more. He's still had a relatively successful career, but when he was the RUSSIAN GUILE, it seemed like he was POISED FOR FUCKING HW GREATNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAR SERGEI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

None of them had a name big enough to represent them yet. Im sure in 2004 tho Assuerio Silva was with them. He just wasnt ready yet. Probably didnt ever really achieve the level required.
