So i was watching the legendary nights on Pryor Arugello and they bring up the black bottle. And one commentator after another talks about how Pryor didn't need the bottle to beat Arguello that night. I know Pryor beat him up good in the rematch, but watching the first fight i think thats bullshit. In the 13th round of a fight that had been a war, Arguello is landing BOMBS on Pryor. Pryor gets back to his corner looking like he was ready to go, drinks from the bottle, and suddenly bursts out of his corner to get the stoppage in the 14th. Thoughts?

I think we all know whats in the bottle...

Panama Lewis (Pryor's trainer) was known for doing stuff like that. This is minor compared to how he got banned from boxing.

I think one of his former fighters Luis Resto outed him for both loading wraps and mixing in asthma inhaler like medication into the water bottles.

Clear audio evidence of him asking for a bottle he mixed. Was there anything common or legal to mix into water back then?

Well I do think, considering Panama's history, that the bottle was laced. I disagree though with the assumption that the big right hand Arguello landed would have been a KO. It was a real big shot but the placement was a little off as far as I could tell. There's really no good explanation I can think of to innocently clarify his request for the bottle he mixed. Saying he meant the mineral water just seems like a lame excuse.

As far as I'm aware only pure water was legal.

I read it was an antihistamine which wouldnt give him that boost of energy, some actually make you sleepy. Well at least the stuff I take for my allergies

It's obvious that drinking from the bottle helped him. If it was nothing, it at least gave him a psychological boost.

I truly wonder if Arguello would have won that fight, how the rest of his career wouldn't have went. He already had a great career but he took a trashing and I think he wasn't the same since. If he would have won, would he have beaten Pryor 2x, since he would not have taken all that damage and would have a psychological advantage?

Is Sugar? Electrolytes?:eek::eek::eek:lyte? Sports drinks like Gatorade?
Is that stuff against the rules too? Always wondered that. Have only seen water used first hand

According to the ABC, they can use sports drinks but they have to be sealed and presented to the commission. So no self-mixed drinks. But that's now, I'm not sure what it was that long ago.

edit: and that's just ABC. The state athletic commissions might have stricter rules.

I think the rule was only water. It's been a while since I've discussed this incident so I might be mistaken.

Maybe not knocking him out. that was probably to strong. But that was a momentum changing shot that Arguello landed and that wasn't the only one he landed that round either. Watch how pryor runs out of the corner in the 14th. Maybe it was adrenaline. Maybe it was the bottle. I have heard there was at antihistamines were in it to give greater lung capacity and another story that it was cocaine and orange juice.

Whatever it was imo, it changed the fight because it gave pryor the energy to do what he did. Watch the fight ending combo. Have you ever seen a more vicious finish to a fight? And that was in the 14th round of an absolute war. Its just hard to believe imo

Not saying Pryor would not have won because it was a close fight up until that point. But i think the bottle had something to do with the finish.

Despite all this people consider Aaron Pryor a GOAT at 140

What could it have been? As far as I know, when you drink something it takes a lot longer than a minute for the contents to enter your blood stream. When you drink a coffee, it takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes or more for the caffeine to reach peak levels. So if he did take a stimulant, what could it have been that would have entered his blood stream after 30 seconds and allowed him to turn it on in that round?

I believe Loui Resto over Panama

cocaine and orange juice is one rumor i have heard. And the athletic commission didnt take a piss test afterwards either

Luis Resto said he tried it once too, and it was an immediate rush of energy. He said it was antihistamines.

edit- someone beat me to it.

Pretending/assuming the bottle was indeed a cheater's elixer to victory, does this make the fight any less interesting to watch for any of you?

I think the story behind the mixed drink is a source of intrigue for many fans even if it stains the integrity if the competition.

That's the thing...To me it doesn't really bother me if anyone is using PEDs of any sort. I watch for the entertainment anyways. Doesn't make a fight any less interesting or legit. Aguello had the same opportunity to do something for that last "pick er up", Pryor's camp was just better prepared..LOL

Perrier and Water mixed on Ice! Gotta try that. lol

Which bodes the question, I don't know the answer to this and too lazy to read through rule books right now, what if a guy has Asthma, can he use an inhaler if he has trouble breathing during a fight? I'd assume no, but then his life is in danger.
