A few of my training buddies recently brought to my attention that my legs were riding too low while I had someone in my guard. They suggested I keep my legs higher up on my opponents torso, and that would improve my guard a bit and make submissions come quicker and would also making passing my guard a bit more difficult.

Anyway, I'm not the most flexible guy in the world and since implementing their ideas at my last training session, it feels like I may have injured something on my left side. I didn't feel anything noticable until a few days after. The area I'm talking about is located about where my lung or upper ribcage is, right below my upper chest. I can't say that I feel PAIN (per-say), but if definately feels uncomfortable. Sometimes it feels like its cramping up, or as if someone was slightly pushing on it, like pressure. When I feel around the affected area, it feels somewhat sore, but only to the touch. I also have had spasms in that general area for the past few days but they have since begun to decline in frequency.

Normally I wouldn't really worry about it, but I have also noticed ever since this came along that every time I take a deep breath, that area feels like it's cramping up.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience, or anything similar? Any thoughts and/or recommendations?

I just noticed that I didn't stretch before my last class, which was when this occured. So don't be like me, MAKE SURE AND STRETCH!

wow... what a weird coincidence;

I have the exact same problem. And it just happend tuesday. And I also came in about 5 minutes late for class and missed the stretching. And I too was trying to bring my legs up real high on someones back and am not very flexible however I thought it was due to rolling with a 300 pound fatty and the pain was due to him laying on me.

The first day or so I felt a tiny bit of pain in a couple areas when I pressed on it but nothing major. The main thing was that I couldn't breath in deeply without feeling unfomfortable.

I feel better now but it still isnt better and I was hoping to go back to training today but it's probably not a good idea :'(

My dad is a physician so I didn't bother going to the ER and he told me that they wouldnt really do anything for me since it wouldn't show up on an x-ray. He just said to take IB Profin to reduce the swelling if there was any (although my chest looks perfectly normal) and that I should just not lift or do any training until its healed and not to rush into it.

I'd guess maybe a bruised rib or strained tissue in the ribcage. Pretty easy to do, and can be painful/uncomfortable, as that area sees a lot of constant movement, what with breathing, moving and all.

my guess just from what u are saying is. costal chondritis-
is an inflammation of a rib or the cartilage connecting a rib. This is a common cause of chest-wall pain. Inflammation or injury involving the chest muscles is another common cause of chest-wall pain. pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone.
use NSAID. or anti inflamatory. usually 800 mg motrin. i pill every 8 hours with food or milk. ive had this problem before and it didnt feel good.
