being the grappling forum; i would like to get an impression on mma blkbelts, as far as how they compare to other blkbelts and how good a blkbelt they are.

i know recently we can't watch a ufc w/out discussing ken flo's blkblt in bjj, so i wanted to get a grapplers perspective on impression of his overall technical/strategical and applied skills as a bjj stylist.

as well as discussing other bjj blk blts

matt serra-
bj penn-
travis lutter-
nog
wanderlei silva-

anyone know what kind of skills they have and how they rank overall in grappling ability in regards to being the best in the world; or how they match up w/other top grapplers in the world outside bjj....

actually i was at my friends when i did it and his kid had messed up the keyboard so i did the best w/wht i had.............

thanks for responses anyways

matt serra, bj penn and nog have all proved themselves in big bjj tournaments. Wand's guard game has advanced alot but he would not be top 50 in the world in his weight class IMHO.

I look forward to this thread. Should be interesting.

Regarding different fighters do some seem more top oriented in sport and go bottom in mma or vice versa for instance?

Do the guys with a strong basic game(comparatively) do any better than the more strategic gamers? Do the athletic types stand out as well from bjj to mma?(Penn 'seems' more athletic than Busta)

well its obvious guys like BJ and Lister have good sport bjj games but HONESTLY mma BJJ is a different game . The bjj game that works in MMA is still the basic style that Royce displayed way back when.

nog is not really atheletic. BJJ guys tend to be more about cordination than atheletic ability. THat added with the fact that other people learn submission defence and add time limits is what hurts bjj guys in mma.

Is Carlos Newton a bjj black belt?

I don't think enough BJJ fighters work from the top. The classic image of a BJJ fighter in mma is of a guy on his back working for the triangle or armbar while (sometimes desperately) trying to avoid being punched (elbowed in the UFC) in the face.

The old saw used to be that BJJ fighters were the only ones who really knew how to fight from their backs. But that doesn't mean that jiu jitsu guys should always WANT to fight from their backs.

I'd like to see more BJJ fighters work to put the OTHER GUY on his back. For too many jiu jitsu guys, it almost seems as if they'd RATHER fight from their back than from on top.

totally agree. i think the future of bjj in mma is guys like paulo filho, vitor ribeiro, and to a certain extent bj penn and matt serra who have good takedowns, dominate positionally, w/ good subs from the top.

but then again....shinya aoki's guard is like f'in certain death.

Is it that goddamn hard to write out black belt?
hahaha. back on topic... you CANNOT compare someone like bj penn to someone like wanderlei in regards to black belt status. guys like wandy and vitor receieved an 'honorary' black belt from legit instructors. as opposed to someone like penn who actually went to the worlds and dominated the competition. theres two ways to look at bjj black belts in mma:

1) who they got their black belt from.

2) their own bjj accomplishments.

that aside.. even if they are legit bjj black belts. that isnt to say they would lose to someone more no gi oriented in a grappling match like mayhem who is a brown belt in bjj, but trains exclusively no gi.

you guys remember Travis Lutter?
black belt carlos Machado

and fought Matt the law lindland.

I suspect the comparison is about the same as it was the last 100 times this topic came up on this and other forums :)

I, personally, have no eveidcne why bjj would NOT win in the long run......

Humans just seem to be juman and no covering that accspt endurance with style.

I nkow i can hit like a muther fucker, but if you can take it, I learnt early, that u on that endursne is the real in a fite.
