SAN JOSE, Calif. -- After Josh Thomson finished Pablo Villaseca in the second round of Friday night's Bellator main event, his second straight win in Bellator, the former Strikeforce champion said two things that probably surprised people.

The first, when asked in the cage about a potential lightweight title match with Will Brooks, he said that he would do it, but he feels the people would rather he face Michael Chandler.

"Right now the hype is for me to fight Chandler," he said in the cage.

And at 37, and having opened up a gym, and considering opening a second location, plus owning a clothing company, one would think he's not looking at fighting that often in 2016. But his goals are exactly the opposite.

"I want to fight six times in the next year," said Thomson (22-8), "I'm trying to get on the show in Fresno in three weeks. I've got a lot of fans in Fresno. Josh Koscheck (who is headlining the Fresno show) and I trained together for years and I'd like to be on the show with him. I'd like to get on the Houston show in February, and then back here in San Jose in May, so that's three fights right there."

After talking in the cage about wanting to face Chandler, Thomson was at first apologetic to Bellator officials if the idea was to build a fight with Brooks.

But he said that he had asked fans on Twitter who they would like him to face next, and the responses were overwhelmingly in favor of Chandler.

"Realistically, look, I've been a world champion, I've fought for the title, but I came here because I was asking to fight top guys. In the UFC, I wanted to fight Pettis, Cerrone, Alvarez, action packed fights, but they told me they had other plans. I asked for my release after the Bobby Green fight (in July 2014), but they didn't give it so I finished up my contract. I came here. The title sounds great, but I'm here to help build Bellator and that's what I want to do.

"After the show in St. Louis (on Nov. 6), I went on my Twitter feed and all the people were talking about was me and Chandler, not Brooks. People weren't interested in me with Brooks, fans wanted to see me and Chandler. When you're talking about doing numbers on TV, me and Chandler is the bigger sell. I'm here to build Bellator more than I want to win the title. I understand my position in this company and I'm here to put eyeballs on the television screen."

Bellator President Scott Coker wasn't sure which direction to go next.

"When he's motivated, on any given night, he can beat anyone," Coker said of Thomson, who held the lightweight title in Strikeforce and at one point was scheduled to face Anthony Pettis for the UFC title, but Pettis was injured and the fight never happened. "He just has to have that little fire in him. He's going to step up in competition. He'll probably fight in the first quarter or early second quarter (of 2016). I think either one would be a great fight."

While some would take what Thomson said as a slight, Brooks refused to knock him.

"Listen, no one is going to get me to bash Thomson," wrote Brooks on Twitter. "The guy has put his time in, and if he's more about fighting for $ & ratings he's earned it."

Thomson said the combination of running his businesses and his fight career proved to be a heavy undertaking. He said from just before his fight with Benson Henderson, a split decision loss on Jan. 25, 2014, that cost him the shot at Anthony Pettis when Pettis returned after knee surgery, until just before his fight with Tony Ferguson, a more one-sided decision loss this past July 15, it was a struggle.

"It's been hard, honestly," he said. "My Benson Henderson fight was right after I opened it. It was hard. I was trying to start the business and organize my business. I finally got it organized enough right before the Tony Ferguson fight. Now memberships are up and the place is hopping. I'm talking about opening another one, maybe one or two more, smaller gyms, maybe 5,000 square feet, small little spots without a lot of overhead. It was tough. I also own a clothing company called KNOXX gear. Those businesses take up a lot of my time. It's always trying to design a new shirt, new shorts, new workout gear, it's non-stop."

dam, seems to me like coker knows what he is doing...

People may bash some moves he makes, but he does make very strategic decisions..

Coker is based out of cali. He will have tons of shows in cali, so its not hard to understand why he signs people like kos and thomson. They are definitely going to bump up the gate numbers. With a card in fresno, u have kos, thomson, and maybe honeycutt. All cali locals, they could probably draw a decent crowd for bellator. Same thing can be said for san jose or even so cal with the guys just mentioned, and tito as well..

You have ward who could draw decently in his hometown, and chandler who is decent in missouri.. coker is building new bellator go-to venues as well as capitlizing on the existing ones…

also read that a korean bellator event could happen next year, if thats the case, then going after henderson is a huge must….

im excited to see what bellator does in 2016

A korean event would be interesting but I'd like them to sign some Korean talent first or maybe partner with Road FC for the event. There seems to be more fighters coming out of Korea after the success of DHK and KZ... also if I remember correctly, isn't Coker part Korean?

I have a hard time seeing Thompson get even close to six fights. I see three fights being a lot more realistic.

He could get a couple of fights in Rizin, or maybe more if Rizin holds a LW GP.

Yeah, even when he was younger he was plagued with injuries and didn't fight nearly that often. I like Josh, but think he'll have trouble with elite and near-elite fighters at this point. 37 is quite old for a LW. In the lighter weight classes, just a small drop in speed/agility is a big factor.

I doubt all 6 fights will be in Bellator. I think Bellator holds off on chandler vs thomson until Brooks decides whether or not he leaves for UFC. I'd like to see Punk fight in Rizin a few times.

Good for Josh, he is at the end of his career so he should make as much as possible fighting the easiest competition available. Coker should take care of that.

Love his attitude, he seems so happy at Bellator. I hope he can achieve his plans

Yea I agree. Even his attitude now is more about his business than fighting which means he's probably not putting all his effort into his training camps. Which is fine he's at the end of his career and trying to make some money before he leaves.

Is brooks done with his Bellator contract?

I've heard this kind of talk from fighters before. Rarely do they fight 6 times a year.

The guy is injury prone as is, I doubt it. Maybe he makes his camps easier knowing the level of competition he was going to deal. Still, I doubt he'll be saying that when he fights (or prepares to fight) Bellator's top dogs - he's not a lock against any of them. He's not even a favorite against at least three or four in my mind.

Or any fighting company for that matter? Except of course he has a Bellator contract.

ICYMI, Bellator is sending King Mo, James Thompson, AJ Matthews, and Brennan Ward to fight on Rizin's NYE event. Bellator is Rizin's closest ally, and will continue to send fighters to Rizin as long as Rizin exists. If Rizin wants Thomson, Bellator will send him.

agreed, they will swap fighters and promote whenever they can. the ufc has had a couple Asian cards, but they aren't even close to having a foothold in the Asian market. one is the most prominent over in asia but with rizin and bellator working together, we could very well see them have co promotions in japan...

im sure bellator is going to try to beat the ufc to the punch by trying to break into japan and asia in general.

im sure we will see a co promotion with fedor as the main event.

From the way he's talking I don't think he cares about winning or losing really. I think he just wants to gets more fights for more sponsorship money so he can invest in his gyms most likely.
