Final game of the Jeopardy GOAT tournament from last night. Clue is:

(Kareem Abdul-Jabbar delivers the clue.) I became a stronger, faster & more intense basketball player through my training with the great Bruce Lee, who pioneered mixed martial arts with the hybrid fighting style he called this, abbreviated JKD

    http://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6526

And no one knew the answer. These are 3 of the greatest trivia minds of modern times who can collectively deduce on the fly a made up word combining an obscure Chinese fruit and Nostradamus' style of verse but don't know that Bruce Lee's style was called Jeet Kune Do, even when prompted with the abbreviation.

Even sadder, Jennings and Rutter are in their 40's and lived through the kung fu crazy 80's, when every kid wanted to be a ninja and Bruce Lee movies were on TV every saturday morning. Do casuals really not know this stuff?

I missed the last show. They actually couldn't respond correctly to that clue? Wow that's crazy.

Nerds of the 80's didn't know shit about APPLIED fighting techniques, but they threw around words like "Ninjitsu" and "Jeet Kune Do" among their nerd friends. Don't ask me how I know.

    Huh... that's surprising!

But the thread title is a bit dramatic.

Just goes to show you that most people just don’t give a fuck about Bruce.

Also who the fuck trains jeet kune do anyway? It’s known to be absolute bullshit.

Even crazier was that it was a $2000 clue in Double Jeopardy so even the writers thought it was a hard clue. Any kid who watched a Bruce Lee movie on TV in the 80's should have known that.

I'm 44, follow MMA, and didn't know the answer. There was also no "kung fu craze"
in the 80s, no one wanted to be a ninja except a few dorks, and Saturday mornings were for cartoons.
    TS is an idiot.

I follow MMA and am the same age... never heard of it. I never wanted to be a ninja in 80's. I wanted to be Larry Bird. I never gave two shits or knew anything about martial arts until the early 2000's basically.

    Weird thread.

They also might not know who won the Ballon D'or or CL final most recently. Does that mean football/soccer is dying?

Well Dana did say UFC is as popular as football/soccer worldwide.

Film Theory just did a video on this. It points out that the game that James Holzhauer lost at had far easier questions than the ones on his hot streak. If you can handle a weenie making dumb jokes for 10 minutes, its interesting.

Knowing about JKD is definitely a step beyond catching Bruce Lee flicks on TBS Movies for Guys Who Like Movies.

My girl and her sister laughed when I said Jeet Kun Do then were astonished that I got it right. Bruce gets no respect.

Also I got "Favelas" from hearing about them so much on here lol.

If they knew anything about fighting they would've been out getting laid instead of sitting at home memorizing the encyclopedia and we wouldn't even know who they are.

The chop socky craze was much more 70's than 80's. The 80's was more Karate Kid and the Turtles. Bruce was and still is arguably the most famous martial artist in pop culture history, but I'm not surprised a nerd in 2020 couldn't identify JKD. A trivia expert, though? A little surprising.

I'll never forget watching whichever UFC when Wand stepped into the cage to challenge Chuck. I was at a bar and came out of my chair. "It's the fucking Axe Murderer!" I shouted. This was a huge deal at the time with the whole Pride vs UFC thing and the greatest potential matchup anyone could imagine. Anyway, this little fucker at the next table says to me, "What season (TUF) was he on?"

I wanted to drop him on his head, lol, but the point is that some people don't give enough of a shit to invest themselves in combat sports. You can watch some of them getting their asses kicked over in the Street Colosseum forum.
