I'm guessing the Badger does not want to go. I think it likely considers that area home. He just does not want to remain in the pen.

I am guessing that because he does not seem to actually leave in his many escapes and it seems he could if he is getting out in the middle of the night while they are sleeping.

And a loose Badger on the property could reek havoc if you have other livestock or food stores and I think he got in trouble with the lion.

It is obvious that the badger does not want to be caged up permanently as it tries to escape, whether it comes back or not. Seem like you are writing the narrative: he really wants to be caged up no he eats all the livestock no he might get eaten by lions.
